Big, but not very special

Its a nice cathedral, but its not very special (in the category: French Cathedrals)
If you travel in French there are many, much more spectacular cathedrals.

Well worth a visit
Oct 2019
The Basilica is set upon a hill, it is a very steep walk from the main train station in Lisieux. A very beautiful setting. Please note St Therese is NOT buried here, she is buried in the town at the Carmelite Convent, so please bear this in mind when planning your trip. Taxis are available to travel around the town. The parents of St Therese are buried in the Church underneath the main Basilica. The Upstairs Church is very beautiful and there is a relic of St Therese on display in the upper Church. The art work on the roof is also quite spectacular. There is no restaurant onsite there is a nice book / giftshop on the grounds. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. They made our visit very welcoming.

Impressive

Well found this Basilica by chance when holidaying nearby and looking for something to do. The inside is very impressive and surprising that it is only about 90 years old.

Unlike some older churches this makes visiting very easy. There is a large car park and a visitor centre with ample toilets. There is also lots of information about Saint Therese.

Beautiful Basilica!

Do not be put off by the 'plain' exterior! The interior is simply stunning and well worth a good look around. Do not forget the crypt too.

An incredible place to visit.

It looks stunning from the outside but it's not until you walk inside does it hit you. The colour on the walls and ceiling are just amazing. a photographers dream.. We went there as a mass was taking place so had a look around the outside first but having done that we still had 30 mins to wait until it finished but deciced to enter and just sat in the back row, the acostics inside were brilliant. Definately a place to visit and not missed. This was the largest church built in the world during the 20th century.

Beautiful! Definitely a must see!
Aug 2019 • Family
My family of four (2 boys ages 20 and 11) walked through and thought it was incredibly inspiring and impressive so we came back for mass on Sunday- all of which was in French, but as Catholics we could recognize parts of the mass. Catholic or not, this basilica is impressive, the mosaics are stunning and the story of Saint Therese inspiring. Highly recommended!

Surpassed Expectations
Jul 2019 • Family
We bolted on a visit to Lisieux as we thought the weather would be poor. We had not bargained for such an impressive basilica. What makes it so interesting is that it has clearly been built to stand the test of time. It is easy to see that this is a building that will be visited in centuries to come, yet it was only built 90 years ago.

Because it is modern it is also set up to accommodate visitors. The car park is a good size, the toilets are large and there is even a picnic area. Despite this, it is also a central hub of the Catholic community and serves a key religious function.

We would strongly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Definitely worth checking out if you are in Paris or near the area. Such a beautiful and huge church. Check out my blog for more photos and info about the journey to Lisieux for those who are not part of a tour group and doing a Catholic trip on their own in France.

Wow, what a find
Jun 2019 • Couples
We never knew anything about the Basilica before driving pass Lisieux on the highway, which promoted me to look into and decide we needed to visit.
The building is spectacular. Given the history behind it, it is a little sad the the church could not have spent the money on helping those in need rather then using it as a political boost for those in power at the time.
The detail and colour of both the main basilica and the crypt. I would recommend starting in the crypt and going up.
