    Not to be missed 🤩🤩🤩
Sumptuous building built between the 13th and 16th centuries happily mixing Gothic and Renaissance style. Inside no stained glass windows (due to the 1944 bombings) except 4 at the altar. The spire was rebuilt identically after 1944.

    Masterpiece of the Renaissance
Started in the 13th century, the church was completed in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. Its steeple (78 m H) was rebuilt after being shot down in 1944. To see for the ornamentation of the bedside and choir. Historical capitals are not always well identifiable. The modern organ (1997) by Jean-François DUPONT (aged 45) and the replica of the statue of St. Peter present at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome are notable.

    It's worth looking into
This church is located in the center of Caen at the foot of the Château. Although it is also beautiful from the outside, it convinces above all by its ornate interior design in the late Gothic style. If you are interested in religious buildings, I should not miss the church of St. Pierre.

Such a beautiful church, visit if you are in city centre
We are both catholics and the visit for us was a must. The church looks beautiful from outside. There are reconstruction works inside, so follow the notes where you can go and where not… and keep silence. It’s a holy place. The church is named after apostle Peter and you can easily spot his bronze statue. It is vast inside and very beautiful gothic ornaments can be seen. There is a history about the bombing of the church during WW2. I was amazed by the fact there are not a lot of icons and statues typical for the Catholic Churches. No charge to enter, it’s free. And give some food to the beggars outside….show mercy and share your lunch with them. Otherwise they will buy cigarettes if you give them money.

St. Peter church in Caen is a stunning building constructed between the thirteenth and the sixteenth centuries, which stands on the “Place Saint Pierre”, in the city center. Its style is gothic, though the exterior apse and the interior choir reveal an architecture showing the transition from gothic to renaissance.
The church exterior is an example of architectural harmony. The elaborate rose window over the main entrance is imposing as well as the marvellous stained glass windows both on the upper parts of the central nave walls and on the aisles walls. Likewise the pinnacles above the pilasters between the latter stained glass windows, where the exterior buttresses rest, are marvellous. The spire is an outstanding part of the church. It's a spectacular bell tower. The original one was unfortunately destroyed in July 1944 during the Second World War by a shell from a British Navy battleship. It has since been beautifully restored.
The church interior is quite impressive. It's a three nave church, the central nave being wider and much higher than the side aisles. The nave ribbed vault is fantastic. It consists of several bays which from half the length of the nave to the apse present an ornate in filigree design. This encompasses all the chancel ceiling. Likewise, an even more elaborate filigrane work can be observed over the four apse arches, supported by the octagonal columns separating that sector from the ambulatory. It's no doubt a marvellous work. Those four arches are higher than the others. The capitals from the columns at large are very complex and differ from one another. Attached to the columns the pilasters rise as high as the vaults. They are topped by capitals from which the vault nerves stem.
The high altar is dazzling, as well as the ambulatory vault and those of the chapels around it. The pulpit is made of wood, and it's a real jewel. Around its platform one can see some carvings calling forth scenes of Peter's life, and statuettes representing the four evangelists. It's in itself a fabulous artwork. The stained glass windows are beautiful, particularly those of the apse.
During my visit to that church the organ was played. It was breathtaking.
The church concerned is thus an exciting temple from any point of view. Therefore, it's visit is a must while in Caen or in the surrounding area.

Lots of old buildings in this part of France, but this one struck me as special. Not only well preserved, but a great opportunity to get a close-up view of buttresses, often used in Gothic architecture. People interested in building design should plan to spend some time here.

Beautiful Catholic Church across from the Chateau de Caen. Construction took place from early 13th to the 16th centuries. The spire was destroyed in WWII and has been rebuilt. Unfortunately, I only saw the exterior of the building at night, and never got to see the interior.

The St. Pierre Church - a Gothic masterpiece, stands right in the center of Caen across the Chateau. It's striking ornate tower dominates the skyline.
The interior is equally beautiful with terrific stained glass, rose window and organ.
Do come also at night when it's lit in blue color, amazing sight.

I loved the architecture and the intricate details inside and out. Once inside I felt an immense feeling of peace. What fascinated me the most was that there were the Our Father prayers translated in many languages, one of which was in Afrikaans, an official language from my home country South Africa.

We stopped by Caen on the way back from Omaha for dinner. We passed the church which was beside the wall of the Caen castle. Half of the tower was lit with blue light, giving it an eerie look, almost like the light was leaking from inside the tower. It was interesting to look at while waiting at the stop lights. It is quite different from other churches at night. We didn't go in but it would have been interesting to see if the blue light was also used inside.

Since the exterior was so impressive I had to take a peak inside. Nothing wrong with it. Perfectly serviceable as a place of worship & worth taking a look. The ornate stone work on visible externally is breathtaking. Apparently work started in the 13th century with various bits getting added on in subsequent centuries.

an interesting symmetry between the political power represented by the castle and the religious power represented by the many churches, especially this one, and other religious building

Beautiful church not too far from the centre. You do. Red to give it a little while to absorb all the detail but it's well worth the effort.

As churches in Europe go, this church is not spectacular, but its history is what makes it special. Its connection with William the Conqueror and Odon his brother, coupled with its much, much later war damage and proximity to Caen Castle in a city that was strongly contested in WWII gives one cause to pause and reflect upon the people who have worshipped, sheltered in or plotted and planned under its roof.

It has a serene and reflective atmosphere, however the Gypsies make the most of people entering the Church by begging at its doorway.

It is across the road from Caen Castle and good pictures of it can be obtained from an outlying tower there.
