My wife and I had been to Normandy in 2017 and taken a tour of the DDay region and were very disappointed. We decided to go back. We found a couple who offered a fabulous tour of the DDay region. Ben and Dee operated dday1944tour with a real passion and knowledge of DDay and the Normandy region where the DDay invasion occurred. You stayed at their refurbished 15th century manor and ate breakfast and dinner around a beautiful farm table. Ben is passionate and extremely knowledgable about the DDay events, battles and had read every American and British officers field report. Ben took us to battle sites and small Normandy villages that only someone who had read and truly studies DDay and WWII history. I strongly recommend the company dday1944tours.com For anyone who wants a serious and honest DDay experience.

I thought I had a fairly decent grasp of this historical event, but I learned a ton from Mathias. I’ve taken battlefield tours before (Gettysburg), and Mathias includes much more than the obvious movement of troops. He gets into some of the history leading up to the war, and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of many interesting facts that were new to me. I’ll admit that I balked a bit at the price, but it was worth every penny. We saw in one day what would have probably taken two+ days on our own. And I learned things I would NEVER have known without this tour Mathias clearly enjoys what he does; that’s why he is so good at it. If you’re considering this tour, my advice is to book it!

If you are going to Normandy you should hire Mathias Leclere, contact@ddayguidetours.com Telephone. +33 610 021 232 He is fantastic and we had a wonderful day with him from the time we met him at the Caen WWII Museum at 9 am till he dropped us off back there at 6:30. It was a full day of really understanding what went on in the French countryside to free France. You cannot take a bus and get this perspective. After we left the major highway Mathias had us on back country roads explaining what the Allies had to go through- the hedgehogs- to move forward, there is no way a large tour bus could be on these roads and give you this perspective. Our first stop the village of Ste. Mere Eglise which was the staging ground for the paratroopers and the first village the Allies freed. I mentioned this as a friend who took a Tauck tour did not even make it here and this village is significant. From there it was on to the beaches and all of his great explanations. He took the time to tell you about individual men so that the battles had a face, and even about his grandfather going up and seeing the men coming ashore on Juno Beach. The weather was windy blustery and rain on and off and he had the perfect umbrellas for us since ours did not work in the wind. Mathias had thought of every detail. We ended at the American Cemetery and after taps it is a very emotional day standing on the beaches and being in the cemetery. I noticed that almost everyone left after taps, guides included and he said let’s walk and so we walked out into the expanse of the cemetery and he pointed out more personal items. It was a quiet reflecting time. If you want to truly appreciate what the Allies went through and have it brought down to a personal level, he is the person for you. You will have one heck of a fantastic day with Mathias.

I contacted Christophe Rault in July for a one day private tour of the American D Day sites for our two couples traveling together. He was excellent in his email communication and his responsiveness. He even booked our dinner reservations for me for two nights, which was an added service. The day of the tour he showed up at our Chateau early. He had the option of driving you but also offered using your car for a discount. We chose to use our car. He guided us beautifully and shared his wealth of knowledge for more than 10 hours. His language skills were excellent, making it easy for us Americans to understand. His knowledge of D Day and his appreciate of what the Americans did for France was exceptional. I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Normandy. He can be reached at Christophe_Rault@hotmail.com.
