The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Stunningly beautiful cathedral in the quaint town of Bayeux. We had just visited the museum housing the tapestry, and stopped by the cathedral on the way to the Battle of Normandy museum. It was worth the stop!

Even from the outside i was taken with Bayeux cathedral with its gothic style. Inside are some beautiful stained glass windows and an interesting mix of Norman and Gothic architecture. Even my children were impressed with the craftsmanship that went into building it. Slightly confused by the even lights on the tree of liberty tho - needs more info about... More

A nice quiet cathedral which is very grand reflecting his history. A place to have a time of peace and contemplation from the hurly burly of touring but also a grand site to visit for its history and architecture

A lovely place which has had a lot of restoration done. Colourful stain glass windows and art. An amazing sculpture above the pulpit. We could imagine the tapestry in situ here. Don't pay Bayeux without a visit.

Very impressive and beautiful. This cathedral is easy accessible by car, bicycle or foot. It's main entrance is on a little 'place' and once inside you discover the hugeness of this building. Still can't believe they could build this type of structure so long ago. Love the architecture....

It is a beautiful space and we loved having it so close; hearing the bells ring was gorgeous. We didn't have time to wander much but we did enjoy the beauty of it at night.

Absolutely stunning building. The people of Bayeux have done everything right to keep this beautiful cathedral in pristine condition. It is free to enter and is full of information about each part of the building, in both English and French. You can take photos in almost all areas - it is clearly labelled when it is not allowed. You are... More
