The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

We rented a vrbo right down the street from the cathedral....every time I saw this cathedral, it took my breath away.....gorgeous. I would rank this cathedral much more beautiful than Notre Dame in Paris......be sure to save some time to walk the streets of Bayeaux; it is full of history, shopping and good food (especially crepes).

We walked down to the church two different days and it was closed. This was the church were the La Bayeux tapestry was once housed. Take the time to enjoy the outside it is beautiful.

An unexpected discovery in the Bayeux. The architecture is very stunning. Worth going in and having a look at the interior as well as the exterior.

My son was amazed at this building the moment we approached Bayeux it took our a while to go around. There are some fantastic medeval paintings still on the wall too. In fa t we took so long we then didn't have a ouch time left to visit the tapestries mainly because the museum was so busy that day.

Very impressive from the outside and inside there are lots of private chapels and you can go down in to the crypt . Whilst we were there there was organ music playing and it was nice to sit down for a few Moments of reflection.

What a wonderful cathedral full of gorgeous stained glass, information and history. The outside of the cathedral is stunning with all the ornate building decor. The inside is a very quiet and amazing to take in. There are many small chapels and places to stop and read about the history of the church. The stained glass is amazing when the... More

Notre Dame is a "must see" in Paris. However, by the time we saw it, we had walked up and down too many steps and towers to go to the top, so just viewed the interior. The stained glass is beautiful, but far away. (A must more lovely and personal viewing is found at Saint Chapelle.). We found the centuries... More

Although not the greatest stained glass windows in France, these are very impressive ones. It is amazing how bright and colorful when seen from the inside, when the outside looks so dark.

Although Amiens and Reims are of course more beautiful, this cathedral has beautiful, original ceiling paintings in both the chapels as in the crypte. Look at the musicians, as depicted in this beautiful sub terrain place. And maybe, as we did, you can meanwhile enjoy the sound of the beautiful organ.

A cool calm building but very little in the way of information with regards to its history. This is a working cathedral so do be aware of people praying.
