About
The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

    Historical Cathedral
When you see it in the distant it looks really amazing and beckons you to go in. The fact there are no tall buildings around it means you can see it instantly miles away. Inside is very historical with lovely church music playing in the background which I always thinks gives it a special atmosphere. Free to go in too, unlike most UK Cathedrals! It is also a useful landmark to find all the other venues to visit in Bayeux.

    Incredible place
For someone who is not particularly religious, this cathedral is absolutely beautiful, very large and yet somehow feels quite intimate with it’s numerous prayer areas. The stained glass windows are incredibly colourful and it’s history a very long one going back to the 11th century. Stunning!

Breathtaking architecture and detail - just beautiful.
The cathedral is magnificent inside and out and well worth a visit if you are in the area. We stayed in Bayeaux as a base to visit the Normandy beaches and D-Day landings. We experienced the external light show at the cathedral on our first night in Bayeaux and that was spectacular. We returned on our second day to explore inside the cathedral and were glad we did. The architecture and intricate detail in the construction of the building is mind blowing. Allow at least a couple of hours to be able to take everything in. The stained glass windows are beautiful and the frescos on the ceilings are breath taking. I’m so glad we experienced so much more in Bayeaux than it just being a base for us….I would highly recommend.

Beautiful, Gothic Church like Notre Dame in Paris
Very beautiful, gothic church. The stained glass and gothic architecture are stunning inside and out. This is a working and operational church. They do not charge for admission to tour. However, it cannot be cheap to keep in such beautiful condition. Consider a generous donation when you go.

    Nice cathedral
The cathedral is enormous. I read that it's as big as Notre Dame in Paris. Apparently, William the Conqueror's half brother, Odo, was the local bishop and had the cathedral built in his honor so it had to be big. The inside is nice but I think the cathedral in Rouen is even better.

    Beautiful Cathedral Worth the Visit
Also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady, this is not to be missed. It is located in the heart of the old town historic center. A masterpiece of Norman Romanesque and Greek architecture it is as impressive as the “other famous” cathedral in Paris.

Great town in Normandy. Close to the beaches! Don’t miss the Cathedral or the Tapestry
Beautiful! The whole town of Bayeux was a wonderful European experience. Friendly people. Beautiful Cathedral. The Bayeux Tapestry is a must see. Plenty of shops and restaurants to savor fine French cuisine. And the countryside is perfect for day trips!

Central location close to Bayeux tapestry museum
A beautiful peaceful cathedral. Central location, close to the Bayeux tapestry museum. Open to the public, we looked at the architechture inside which is amazing to think how it was produced nearly a 1000 years ago. We attended when the Christmas market it was located outside, it also had farm animals and a santas grotto.

A soaring Gothic cathedral with a thousand years of history. We visited on a sunny day in late April with the western stained glass windows alive with colors. Take a stroll around the exterior to appreciate the size and exterior carvings then enter to view the amazing stained glass. You’ll probably only need about 30-40 minutes.

Normandy boasts with numerous Churches and Cathedrals. This one in Bayeux was the best one along with the Rouen Cathedral we saw on our 10 day Normandy-Brittany tour.
It is set right in the center of this charming town, dating back to early Christianity.
The present edifice we see today was started being built in 11 throughout several forthcoming centuries - therefore difference in style from Romanesque to Gothic.
For a long time it housed the famous tapestry of William the Conqueror becoming the King of England, which is now in a nearby museum.

The Bayeux cathedral is really impressing and very beautiful. It is built in the thirteen century on the foundation of a church from the time of William the conqueror. A few parts of William’s church are still there, namely a part of a tower and the very nice crypt with some very fine mural paintings. It really dominates this cosy small town. Its main tower is really something and all the exterior is very intricate construction and a seldom beauty. It is definitively worth visiting.

The magnificence of the Cathedral can’t easily be described. We were able to go to Sunday worship—and though we are not Catholic, and we speak no French, it was a wonderful experience, as locals, old and young, arrived on Sunday morning. Google translator made it possible to read in English what the priests were saying in French. Just being there and seeing what so many craftsmen created over hundreds of years, viewing the crypts below—imagining what all has happened here was quite an experience—like standing where William the Conquerer stood in 1077!

This is certainly a piece of history that one must see in this town. As I understood it this church began around 1047BC. The architecture and design of the building is so beautiful. It is worth popping back by after dark to see it when it is lit up.

Definitely worth a visit after seeing the tapestry. This is a spectacular example of a mediaeval cathedral. Some of its external buildings are gone but the interior is very impressive with its stunning stained glass windows and impressive crypt.

A very majestic cathedral located in the centre of town.
The architecture and stained glass are classic French. When I visited there was scaffolding on part of it but it did not spoil the buildings splendour.
I was pleased to see the memorial plaque to the British Forces who lost their lives in the Battle of Normandy.

I visited the cathedral during a recent business trip to Bayeux. It is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. I was able to walk around inside the church and take in the rich history which dates back to the Norman Conquest. I was even able to visit the church's gift shop and purchase a rosary. There was a stunning light show in the evening and I will visit again.
