The trip that almost was is about a tour that was booked but not taken.
My friends and I started the process of booking a trip (In January of 2020) to Europe from the USA for late November 2020. Air tickets were booked by the middle of January and we knew most of where to go and what we wanted to do. As the world started dealing with the Covid and we saw Europe and then the USA being knocked down by it, we never gave up hope of things turning for the better. Alas, in late august when several major changes occurred to our flights we decided it was not meant to be. And so we cancelled.
While researching for a tour or the Normandy beaches region, I kept coming across Normandy Panorama and I read its reviews. I was impressed. So, in January, I booked a private tour for 4. Vanessa was great at helping us to figure what we would like to do. I booked a half day tour because we only had one day and 2 in our party where older women. We felt that we could get enough in, on top of an early train ride from Paris and then arriving Late back, that it would not wear them out.
Vanessa was great at explaining what I needed to know and letting me book so early (this was prior Covid) as I was worried about booking too early.
As Covid overtook the world, Vanessa and I continued communication. She was very understanding of my fears of the trip possibly being cancelled. She kept me informed about her area as I did about where we were coming from.
But, when I had to cancel my flights, I had to cancel everything, including our private tour with Vanessa. She was understanding and quickly refunded my money without any questions.
If we do make it that way, I am going to make sure that we will spend the night in her region so that we can enjoy her expertise of the region even more.
So now, this was the trip that almost was and Hopefully, it will be fulfilled in the near future. Thank you Normandy panorama and Vanessa.

Vanessa went out of her way to help us have a great tour. She picked us up from our hotel, dropped us off at the train station, and everything in between was awesome! She customized the tour just for us and shared many interesting details and stories to help us appreciate it even more. I would 100% recommend a tour with her! Thank you, Vanessa!!

Adeline took us for a day trip. Starting in Bayeux to the battery of Pointe-du-Hoc, Omaha and Gold beach and ending in Arromange. She listen carefully in what we wanted and shaped our trip around it.Explained everything we asked in perfect English. We had a great full day.

Admittedly, I booked with Vanessa only a couple months before our visit, and there were not a ton of guides available; I probably should have been more prepared. Vanessa seems like a very knowledgeable guide, but like another Google review said, it's pretty obvious her passion no longer there. I am sure she was unhappy with my American manual transmission skills, but the entire day consisted of her directing us to locations, getting out, giving us just a couple minutes of information, and then saying "Ok, you go look around for 30-60 minutes and I'll meet you back at the car." This was literally the case at Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Pont du Hoc, and the American Cemetery! It was funny, as the day went on, we were basically in tandem with other privately guided groups that were visiting the same places, and I kept recognizing those same guides actually walking around and engaging their customers while Vanessa was just waiting for us at the car. By the time we got to the cemetery, I was really wishing I had booked with one of them! A couple of odd, awkward moments were 1., the museum we visited (which was an extra charge) was great, but seemed like maybe she was getting a kickback for taking us to that one, versus the 40 others in the area, and 2,. while we very appreciative that she was able to call ahead and get us a table at a restaurant at Utah Beach for lunch, it again seemed like there was some sort of reciprocal deal with them? We all sat and had lunch together (again another guide had a table of people next to us, telling stories all thru lunch: Vanessa? Not so much). Anyway, after lunch, the bill comes, and she has walked away from the table. I went to the counter to pay, and told the attendant that I would pay for Vanessa (which I thought would be a nice thing to do) and the person kinda acted surprised I was going to pay for her, like her meal was on the house, but of course she let me go ahead and pay for her...and after we left, Vanessa made absolutely no mention of it, nor a simple thanks. Is this petty on my part? Maybe, but it was just extremely awkward, and just another little snapshot on the day. Anyway, I am sure Vanessa is a nice person, and was probably once a really great tour guide, but today she isn't much more than a direction giver. Also, I don't give this review lightly as I am a small business owner also, but her services are not cheap, and I think its fair to let others know what they may expect if they book with Panorama.

My husband and I did the D-Day American Experience tour with Vanessa and it was perfect. She was very knowledgeable and fun to spend time with. We got to see everything we wanted to see but never felt rushed. Vanessa gave us time at each location for personal reflection and exploration. I cannot say enough about how educational and interesting this day was. After this experience I would say a trip to the beaches HAS to be done with a guide. This was our favorite activity in France.

Our group of 10 spent the most amazing three days with Vanessa. WOW!
From the first time I contacted her until the last tour, she worked with our group to make sure that we saw what we wanted, not just what she thought was most important. She was so knowable on every aspect of the Normandy area going back to William the Conquerer all the way to present times. Vanessa helped to facilitate us going to our uncle’s grave at the Collevile Cemetery and arranged for a short ceremony at the grave.
I would highly recommend Vanessa and Normandy Panorama for your next tour

I rated the tour a 5 because of Vanessa; she organized a flawless journey!

We were a group of ten and our tour was for three days. From our hotel to the comfortable coach (complete with chargers!) to recommending the perfect restaurants, she made our trip magical. She was our guide at every location and was extremely knowledgable. I have personally been to Normandy two other times and never heard most of the information she shared. The museums were amazing, too! You can tell she loves her profession which is a passion for her. She’s also a very friendly and warm person, which made our time in Normandy fun. If you are looking for the perfect guide, look no further!!

Our intent was to hire a private guide to tour the Normandy beaches. After contacting several highly recommended tour guides who were unavailable, Vanessa from Normandy Panorama suggested a small group tour with her colleague, Natacha on Sunday, May 18.
It is our experience good tour guides are passionate about their work. Although very personable and willing to please, Natacha did not have that passion. She failed to give us a sense of what our soldiers were experiencing on D-Day. She offered nothing more than showing us pictures and diagrams. Natacha did not give us a sense of the magnitude of the attack and all that went into planning it. She did not mention that soldiers were parachuted in, that the water on Omaha Beach turned red from blood or point out where the Germans lie in wait. It was another tourist in our group who imparted that knowledge. She also did not give us a sense of the magnitude of the invasion by imparting any statistics (6000+ ships and 13,000+ aircraft involved, 9,000+ allied soldiers killed out of the 150,000+ involved, etc.).
Additionally, Natacha failed to mention that the reinforcements failed to come to Pointe du Hoc, because of a pre-established plan, requiring those landing to call before 7 am. She just said it was too late, with no background information. In addition, after providing a basic overview at each stop, Natacha gave us no direction as to what we should look for when she gave us time to explore on our own. After leaving the cemetery, we learned that we should have walked to the other side of the chapel to see the beach. If we had opted to visit the beaches on our own, we would have carefully researchd what we should see. Having arranged a tour we felt it was unnecessary to do that research. That was a mistake in this case.
Overall we had difficulty understanding Natacha. She definitely speaks English better than either of us speaks French, but she might not be quite ready to serve as an English tour guide. This could also explain why Natacha did not engage the tourists on the tour, especially the two young boys traveling with their parents. What could have been an exciting learning experience appeared to be pure torture for them, resulting in complete boredom. Vanessa responded to a previous critique that Natacha gave her a tour and trained her before she allowed her to go out on her own. We wonder if that tour was in English or French.
On the other hand Natacha was kind enough to make a stop at our request at the end of Omaha Beach so we could view the sculpture “The Brave.” Fortunately, we had a printout about the sculpture that we could share with the group. Natacha provided the other tour members with no information on the sculpture or why we were stopping. We wondered if Natacha knew the significance of the sculpture, which we will never know since she stayed with the van at that stop and chatted with a friend she bumped into after she gave us a basic overview of our final stop. When we requested to see “The Brave” via email with Vanessa before the tour, she was quite adamant that this was not possible, saying there was not enough time. There was more than enough time to accommodate the stop, which was at the end of Omaha Beach.
As stated in a previous review, we felt like we hired a driver who had some knowledge of the area, not a tour guide. Overall, the tour was extremely disappointing. Fortunately, we visited L’Memorial in Caen prior to the tour and went into the tour with some valuable information.

Hello sir, I remember very well exchanging emails with you. I wanted to help you advising this tour to you but i shouldn't have done it! If you know already about the history of the landing beaches, why did you take a tour? And if it was so disappointing , why did you put a 3 out of 5 stars?? I won't waste more than a minute answering your critics as they are just not justified! What i understand is that you didn.t get what you wanted ( a private tour guide as you were too late booking one!!) so you decided to ruin the reputation of my tour guide and normandy panorama. She was kind enough to stop at the sculpture " les braves" according to your wish and this is the reward for it. About her english, indeed, it is not her mother tongue but she has a good level and she is a certified tour guide by the ministry of tourism. She graduated so she is ready to give tours in english! If you want to give lessons about ww2, i would advise you to read more about it as your figures are not accurate. If you want to be a tour guide in normandy, please do it as obviously you are better than we are to give tours!! I m not worried as i know people read the reviews and can notice which one are justified or not! Natacha has excellent reviews as well and i did receive one on the website at the same time as yours. We can't please everyone unfortunately!!

I contacted Vanessa at Normandy Panorama and she assured me that she was available on the date that I wanted. She also wanted to know whether we wanted a car. I followed up with her immediately and when she didn't respond, I sent several additional emails. After several weeks I finally got a response from her and she told me that she had been too busy to respond and was no longer available.

I would strongly urge all of you to avoid Normandy Panorama so that you will not be disappointed as we were.

Dear traveler, As i told you in different emails, I'm really sorry that you were disappointed by the fact that i couldn't take you on a tour on the date you wishes. You emailed me indeed and i told you i was available, but this situation changed for personal reasons before you replied the email i had sent to you. I didn't confirm the tour with you at all for that day, so, i don't agree with the title of your review. i did not renege on commitment and actually found somebody who would be available to do this tour with you that you didn't want to contact unfortunately. About the fact that it took some time to reply the mails, indeed, I was really busy at that time and as a self employed person, sometimes it is really hard to keep up to date with answering emails when you're guiding all day long. I don't have a secretary and i wish i could have one. So, again, I'm really sorry you were disappointed and i hope you were able to find somebody to help you for your tour and that you enjoyed Normandy. Thank you, Vanessa Normandy Panorama
