The Gothic architecture is lovely and the church is really interesting inside. The stained glass windows are stunning. Really glad we went.

Locate in the main city centre and easily found, beautiful stained glass windows and well worth a wander around the outside and if time permits a inside viewing.

We traveled to Lille specifically to come to this church to give thanks - our Lille trip was a pilgrimage. The reason was that in this place, a very important prayer was prayed some years back, and that prayer was answered, providing a deep and enduring blessing to our family.

In addition to that preeminent spiritual reason for visiting, the church itself is marvelously filled with not only church architecture but also a deep sense of worship and silence.

An impressive building with some beautiful stained glass windows. Otherwise, no real wow factor but worth the visit.

Situated not far from the main train station, this Cathedral makes a good starting point for the town exploration. Some stained glass paintings and statues make this cathedral a place worth visiting at least once.

Our hotel was right next door to this church so we managed to study the exterior every day. It is a huge church and does not seem to be mentioned very much in the tourist information guide books although classed as an historic monument.

We were greeted by a layperson, who gave us a brief history of the church which was really enthralling.

I had never heard of Saint Maurice, but inside is a detailed description of his life. Briefly, Saint Maurice was martyred around 287 along with other members of the Theban Legion. He was a Christian Soldier from Upper Egypt who twice refused to obey the Emperor’s order to attack innocent civilians therefore he and his fellow Christians were executed.

During the French Revolution the church was turned into a “Temple of Reason”, the furniture destroyed the sculptures and statues mutilated, the reliquaries and precious items were pillaged. Other churches in the city were destroyed thus increasing this importance of this church. Following the Revolution, the development of the City led to the Church being restored and enlarged. In 1905, with the separation of the Church and State, the Church of St Maurice became the property of the municipality.

There are some ancient statues and paintings in the church which have survived the trials and tribulations that this church has suffered.

The interior is of unusual design – hallekerk – which means hall-church in Flemish, and it is just that, more of a rectangle than the more usual Greek or Latin cross, the resulting space gives the impression of a hall.

This large open space separated only by the columns, no distinct division of a nave and side aisles as in most churches. At the rear of the church there is a huge ornate gilt altar with beautiful stained glass windows behind.

All the chairs were arranged in the centre of the church around a modern altar, I guess for a smaller congregation and a beautiful traditional style dark wooden carved pulpit at the side.

There are two organs, the nave organ dated 1877 and the chapel organ dated 1882.

Just before you go out of the front door take a look at the beautifully carved ornate stone archway.

The church is open Monday to Friday 11 am – 6 pm, Saturday 11 am – 7 pm and Sunday from 2 pm.

Desecrated, by beggars, using recesses outside, and walls as a toilet, they go in broad daylight, and have no shame, the cleaners hose it down , every morning, the church is lovely, paintings going back to 1780, the steeple is being repaired, hence covered in scaffolding, but dont miss this out, you will regret it

All you have to do is visit this grand old church that dates back to the Middle Ages to sense how the RC Church dominated the spiritual, political, and economic life of the times. This church positively drips with importance. From the many priceless stained glass windows, to the ornate statues, to the vaulted ceilings, this structure just reminds you how pervasive the church was. This church is awesome in 2015. Just imagine this being part of the landscape in the 1600's.
