- Ivan T.Amsterdam, The Netherlands407 contributionsmust-do in Lille[actual visit took place in December 2022] This is a fantastic museum with plenty of nice paintings on display. The building itself is an interesting example of the architecture from the times when North of France had a stronger economic standing. We would recommend dedicating at least 2-3 hours to visiting this museum. It could be a good thing to do in the 2nd half of the day, before hitting the bar scene (there are plenty of good restaurants and bars in the walking distance from this museum).Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 4, 2024
- Flower53_10Tbilisi, Georgia1,764 contributionsMust in LilleThis is a beautiful museum, the building is old and magnificent, but what is the most interesting here in the art. You can admire a lot of beautiful art pieces even the old Egypt, Roman times etc, but what I liked the most is their paintings, especially beautiful pieces by impressionist. Not to miss while in Lille.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 11, 2024

- Candice MSwanley, United Kingdom842 contributionsNot one to rush to unfortunatelyWe are fortunate to have visited many museums all over the world and this is one I would not particularly rave over. A lot of the exhibits were not to our taste but there was a Monet exhibition which totally made ghe visit worthwhile. The building itself is beautiful but many of the exhibits were somewhat disappointing. I really felt they have a huge space there and not enough pieces.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2024
- DavidLille, France1,911 contributionsGreat.I particularly appreciated my visit to the Fine Arts musuem. The relief maps on the first floor are amazingly intricate, and it's nice to be able to explore the map of Lille. Some interesting paintings and objects are spread throughout the museum. Great.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 15, 2024

This museum, already a grand building in itself, is a real wonderful museum. Especially its collection of paintings is superb, with dutch/flemish greats like Rubens, Breughel and van Dyck and also other great artists like the Picasso and the french impressionists. It is special that this great place only charges a 7 euro entrance fee (2020). In my country museums are much more expensive. Keep in mind that entrance is free on the first sunday of every month.

Wonderful setting for wonderful art. The collection was a bit smaller than we'd imagined, especially in such a spacious setting and while the ground floor collection is beautifully displayed some of the upper rooms feel under-lit - but overall a stunning art gallery. The map room in the basement is a rare treat and well worth a visit. Also loved the Constance Guisset windmill seating in all the galleries.

Really, if you love art, don’t visit here. A beautiful building with paintings in an interior so gloomy that it’s really difficult to see anything. In addition, some of them have darkened with age and could be cleaned, so the overall effect is extremely frustrating.

This was really a fantastic place to visit. It is an art museum with wonderful collections. Gallery 17 was amazing - you could get so close to Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec, Monet, Rodin etc. On 3 floors there is something wonderful to see at each turn. Also 2 for 1 ticket if you show Eurostar ticket. Very cheap for a great few hours. Free coat room, free WiFi and a small cafe. Do not miss this place!!

The museum was one of the main reasons we came to Lille and we were very disappointed. It is a vast building but actually has a very small amount of art on display. Worse, two of the major galleries were unlit with only limited daylight to see by. Very odd. On a positive note the display of 16/17th century scale models of nearby cities and their defences was quite amazing.

We went to the museum for the “doudou rendezvous” workshop with my 17 month old daughter.
The workshop is led by a lively person, she takes time with the children. I recommend!,
Two small remarks:
- the workshop is suitable for ages 0 to 18 months, but I recommend the workshop to children who can sit still to make the most of the experience,
- the place and the works could be better highlighted (perhaps a mini tour of the museum or the sculpture section?)

As described, this is a large gallery & it would be optimistic to see and appreciate all that is on display!
On the lower level are a number of 17th C relief displays of Low Country cities. These were used by the military of the time, and the planners in Ypres used it to assist with rebuilding the city after the damage of WW1. These were a surprise find for me.
Upstairs & in adjacent rooms are the more traditional artworks, with many of the well known artists represented.
The building itself is magnificent, and has been recently renovated.

This large museum about 10 minutes from the Grande Place in Lille is worth a visit. It has a whole floor devoted to paintings, but there are also many items representing religious iconography. Particularly worth seeing are the "minatures" of old towns - they are incredibly well recreated, and give a good picture of what the towns looked like in real life, all those years ago.

There is very little signage. We unfortunately only had 90 minutes, which was never going to do this magnificent building Justice. Most of the stairs were closed. The map was very basic snd the guides couldn’t direct us to specific paintings eg Delacroix. Lots of emphasis on wearing rucksacks at the front and not standing too close, producing your ticket for each floor etc but staff have no knowledge of the collection. There were huge paintings just leaning up the frames of others. Lots of empty rooms and paintings on loan. Titles of paintings missing, so we had to Google a lot. There are tours on the online QR code site, but without signage it was impossible to follow these (eg arrows with numbering maybe). We did see some fabulous impressionist works - but hung on gaudy purple walls which affected the tints. Just really frustrating as it is supposed to be the second best gallery outside Paris. The collection maybe, but it is not accessible. The interactive exhibition downstairs was amazing, great for all ages and staff really helpful there.

We loved the Donald Duck Exhibition. It is a great way to get kids on a grand tour of a fine arts museum. Will the exhibit travel to other cities, in particular any on the west coast of the United States? Thank you
