- B TLondon, United Kingdom1,255 contributionsIt’s set in a nice park area and you can walk around the citadel fortifications anytime for free. The main building you can’t really go in as the army/ministry of defence use it which is a disappointment. It’s hard to get a good view of it.Visited November 2024Traveled soloWritten November 28, 2024
- Eric LJura, France798 contributionsWhat better way to rest from the hustle and bustle of the city, and to digest after a good meal in an estaminet, than to take a good digestive walk in this large Lille park that has kept a natural, almost "wild" side. The change of scenery is total and will allow you to recover from the noises of the city. I particularly recommend the walk that goes all around the Citadel.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 8, 2024
- RlfDinkyRoubaix, France5,792 contributionsA very pleasant place to walk around the citadel. The interior is occupied by the European armed forces. This citadel is the first site of the illustrious Vauban (more than 100 projects in France) and he applied his defensive principles there. The walking path is a round between ramparts that could be flooded to repel the attackers. The central structure is a pentagram surrounded by a nested succession of triangles (an aerial view is available on the web). Behind the walls, mounds of earth on which trees were deliberately planted from the outset as protection. Over time the citadel has become a green lung of Lille. A beautiful walk with the esplanade nearbyVisited November 2024Traveled with friendsWritten December 30, 2024
- Traveler18327551723Paris, France12 contributionsOn the edge of the city, in a shady and quiet space, nice place to take a little walk or bike ride. We can't go inside, it's still a military place. The tour of the fortified enclosure allows to see the marshes, the pastures for horses, pony and cows, to get "lost" in the deadlocked paths (many overlook fenced places). As already written, there is also a small Attraction Park and nautical rentals nearby.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 9, 2024
- DavidOxford, United Kingdom1,917 contributionsThe Citadel is an amazing architectural jewel. The history of the site is very interesting. It is a functioning military base, however you can gain access through an organised tour. This is very highly recommended. Otherwise, you can get as far as the 'drawbridge'.Visited July 2024Traveled on businessWritten July 19, 2024

Nice place to take a walk in the cool, well-maintained area. The citadel also houses the zoo, but too bad it is closed on Tuesdays. They could have made the effort to open on August 15 when it was busy.

We wanted to do a self guided walking tour and this place featured prominently on the map we got. It was right on the other side of town but we made the effort and took it in along the way.
There wasn’t a great deal to see to be honest. No doubt it is full of history but it isn’t the most accessible from the pathways that wend their way around it and it is a bit overgrown.
We thought we had found the main entrance to it once but we were stopped by the security guard as we were going into some French storm trooper barracks apparently!
We beat hasty retreat and went elsewhere.

This is not a thing. Do not go there, thinking this is a thing, because it isn't. This, is an army base with a canal around it. I was furious. It's massive though, and by the time you realise what a bad decision you have made, you are already about 45 minutes from anywhere with booze. If you like dilapidated brickwork with the possibility that an over zealous army boy might shoot you, then come here. Otherwise, do anything else. We did see a heron. Hence the one star.

Although you can't access the inner sanctuary, due to it being a military base. It's well worth walking around the outside. The construction was formidable, huge walls of brick forming a pentangle. The park with the old moat made a pleasant walk. There is also a children's zoo and amusement park, so something for all the family

We walked and cycled around and it is a lovely chilled out space, we saw frogs, water rat, heron, and kingfisher and not many people. It is about a 2km loop if you do the inner path so not too taxing.

We love to wander and explore and came across The Citadel by chance especially as it's not on the main tourist map provided in Lille.
It's an interesting area near the Canals, the free Zoo and lovely Jardin Vauban park. A good area to sit and take in the quieter side of Lille away from the shops the Vagrants, the traffic and the smell (especially near the Metro stations) of Lille.
Definitely a highlight to our visit and some of the signs were in English too, but only a few.

I had hoped to go on a tour of this military fortification.you have to book through the tourist office. However what they do not mention on their website is the fact that you have to book a few days earlier so that security checks can be made.Pity they didnt make that clear on their website.so i was unable to go on the tour but was only able to walk around the exterior of this large fort.Pity the authorities couldnot be more relaxed about joining a tour.

Nice area to have a relaxed walk, since there are few people around, but the citadel itself is out of limits for general population, still being a military base. It's quite a sight, so it's too bad.

Situated close to the city and accessible by foot from the centre this old army citadel now houses the NATO rapid reaction force of the army and has been there since the 18th century. The moat/canal has a delightful walk around the exterior, zoo and park.
Group visits can be obtained with a weeks notice inside the walls.

We really enjoyed this visit. There is a very attractive park next to it, river walks and then the Citidel has a circular walk around the stronghold beside a moat. You cannot go into the Citidel but it is interesting to see the stonework and various bridges along the route.
