About
If you are not yet convinced that Lille is DEFINITELY the best place to be in France (if not the world), you probably haven’t come to The Waf yet. That’s because we’re the first dog café in Europe! That’s right – a café where not only you can have a tea, cookies, and awesome Sunday brunches, you can also pet our dogoes. Basically heaven on earth. So how exactly does it work? We have 6 dogs here -they all come from animal rescue centres. What a lovely concept - a cafe that allows access to (on the day of our visit, 6th January 2020) six very friendly dogs, some of whom were looking for a permanent home, others who are members of the permanent pack associated with Le Waf. For €5 you can drink as much fresh coffee as you like, and if you're hungry, for a little extra there's a short menu of toasted sandwiches and other items.

The main attraction though, of course, is the pups - such a joy to spend some time with! They varied in age and backgrounds, arriving at Le Waf for a range of reasons, but all very sociable and friendly to visitors. We were handed small treats to feed them, and this ensured that they were very keen to interact with us! The people who run the cafe clearly love their work and the dogs, and were inc redibly kind and accommodating, allowing us in when we hadn't booked in advance and we weren;t at all sur ewe would be able to visit.

All in all it was a really lovely experience, and a joy to see on Le Waf's Facebook page afterwards that one of the families who were taking a small puppy out for a walk when we visited have now adopted him permanently. The visit was one of many highlights to a fantastic weekend in beautiful Lille.

While spending 4 days in Lille with the wife recently we stumbled upon this cafe by accident on the way back to our hotel from seeing the citadel.
Unfortunately when we found it, it was closed. Almost all places seem to close on a Tuesday in Lille.
Not to be too disheartened I decided to contact the cafe via FB messenger to enquire about visiting. The chap I spoke to was very friendly and informative of the cafe and it's aim.
We visited the next day and managed to get in without a reservation even though it was pretty busy when we arrived.
The thing that stood out for us about this cafe is the fact that the dogs they have there are for adoption.
The other dog cafes I've been to in Scotland, the pooches are owned by the proprietors and are not for adoption.
The cafe owner gives every visitor a wee biography of each of the 6 dogs that were in attendance that day.
After the chat you are left to your own devices to help yourself to as much tea and coffee as you can consume for the rather generous price of 5 euros per person. You can buy cakes, biscuits, milkshakes etc for an additional price.
I must stress that the dogs will not automatically approach you for cuddles, they will do this on their own time so a degree of patience is needed. For the most part the dogs are too interested in the owner of the cafe as I suspect they associate him with food and regard him as their alpha.
In all honesty, it was nice to just sit in the company of the dogs while watching them play with each other or wander about doing their own thing. A decent way to spend a couple of hours.
If I am ever back in Lille I will definitely be revisiting Le Waf!
I've submitted some images I took on my visit, as you can see the dogs are content and well looked after. 😍🐶

Great cafe - a little hard to work out if you don’t speak French but the staff are fantastic and try their best with English to make you feel at home! Everything is self service and they try to involve all guests with the dogs - just adorable.

Stumbled across this genius cafe yesterday during our last afternoon in Lille. What a great find - and a lovely last treat for our short break.

Very friendly furry friends (esp Gypsy and Engie who both took it in turns to have dozes with us on the sofa), unlimited tea and coffee, to which you ‘help yourself, like you are at home’. Definitely a cosy and welcoming spot for a bit of dog therapy - we highly recommend a visit!

This cafe is an amazing place to visit. The concept is admirable; looking after rescue dogs. Two of the dogs are up for adoption and they have rescued many dogs in the past. There are 6 dogs who are so cute and friendly and happy for you to pet and fuss them. The entrance fee is only 5 euros and that includes help yourself tea and coffee. You can buy delicious cakes or hot chocolate if you fancy. Carolyn and Marie will chat to you and tell you all about the dogs and their characters and they all definitely have their own personalities. A great way to spend a couple of hours. Makes all other cafes seem boring! Do make time for a visit.

I worked as a stagiare at Le Waf for a month and absolutely loved my time there. My french is okay but far from perfect and yet the staff there welcome me with open arms and helped me feel comfortable as well as teaching me a lot about both the dogs and the language. All the dogs at Le Waf are great and each have a personality of their own, I surprised myself with how much I fell in love with them! As a dog cafe, all the guests are also dog-lovers and therefore lovely and made my time at the cafe really feel like home.

The concept is amazing, the price is great and the cakes are delicious - I wouldn’t change anything about my time at Le Waf and I can’t wait to come back to Lille and visit. I’m especially appreciative of Caroline and Marine because they were so understanding of my position and their love their job and the dogs was absolutely contagious!

Merci beaucoup Izzy !!

Great place, friendly dogs even beans the barking beagle
€5 entry including free coffee and cereal €3 extra for a hot chocolate
We came across this place completely by accident and I had to go back the next day for a visit
Loved it even though the hot chocolate was very disappointing
Wish they’d have offered me a beer 🤣
All in all glad we went

I had read about le Waf before coming to Lille and knew we had to visit. We went on a Wednesday morning for around opening but I can tell it gets busy so booking is probably a good idea.
We had some yummy cookies but honestly we were there for the dogs, there are 7 dogs and there real characters. Three belong to Let Waf and 4 are from a shelter. We were lucky enough to have cinnamon come sit with us, she is a beautiful and gentle soul any one who re-homes her are very lucky, I was also entertained by Beans who is a real character.
If your a dog lover it certainly is a must visit in Lille.
