An ok statue located near the gardens and on your way to the zoo or the citadel. Not spectacular but worth a walk by.

While on our way to take a stroll around the Deûle canal and the gardens surrounding the “Citadelle” we were intrigued by this huge monument by Félix Desruelles (1928) carrying the inscription “Lille à ses fusillés”. It is not a particularly beautiful but a rather touching memorial representing four members of the resistance group ‘Comité Jacquet‘, who were captured and executed in the dungeons of the nearby citadel in September 1915. The fifth figure, lying face down, is Léon Trulin, a student who was shot in November of the same year.

In the end we didn’t get to the gardens because we got stuck in traffic. We didn’t know that the car park Champ de Mars near the Citadel was closed for an indeterminate period of time.
