Recently,I spent several days enjoying fine paintings and sculpture at Toulouse's huge,Musee de Augustins. I studied French Medieval Sculpture and Romanesque Sculpture from several Toulouse houses of worship. I studied and enjoyed fine paintings by Perugino,Gabriel Blanchard,Esteban Murillo,Nicholas Tournier,Jean Marie Pierre Vien,Francois de Troy,Francesco Guardi,Thomas Couture,Corot,Rixens,J.P Laurens,Achille Lauge,Edouard Manet, and of course,Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.This museum had a series of gargoyles from a medieval church and an attractive vegetable garden. This museum also had nice postcards of their paintings. I appreciated this museum even more because I encountered lots of rain when I visited Toulouse in December,2004.

This museum is in the center of the town, near the metro station Esquirol. If you are a college student, is free for you to visite ! They got many religious statuts from gothique period also a hand full of painting in various period. Remind that, this isn't Louvre or d'Orsay, it isn't enormous but worth to visit.

Museums by their very nature display artifacts of interest. But it is rare to have the display of the artifacts to be as interesting as the items on display. The Musée des Augustins capitalizes on its beautiful historic structure and courtyards to creatively display familiar objects in novel ways that invite you to reinterpret what you seeing. The curators of this museum are outstanding in their creativity. For example, they will inject a contemporary painting in a gallery of neoclassical paintings. The juxtaposition is at first jarring and surprising but it allows you to immediately consider the artistic qualities of two separate periods of art that you will not likely otherwise experience. The curators do this with sculpture as well. My favorite display is of medieval gargoyles lined up and stood on their ends. Yes they are gargoyles standing vertically rather than seen in their usual horizontal postures but when you step back and look at the whole ensemble, they look like a row of singing (howling?) dogs! In other words, the curators are giving you new opportunities to (in this case humorous) experience the world of art. This museum, along with the Sir John Soane Museum in London are my favorite museums based on the interesting, creative manner of their informative displays. If you are near or in Toulouse, make the time to visit this interesting museum.

The red terracotta Toulouse Museum of Art (Musée des Augustine) building was originally built in the 13th century as an Augustinian monastery. In 1793 during the French revolution it was confiscated from the Roman catholic church and turned into a public building. It was opened to the public in 1795 as a Museum that houses everything from Roman and local Occitan sculptures to paintings from the Middle Ages and the early 20th century.
The fountain in its small cloister was copied in 2006 and installed in the Place Saintes-Scarbes, after the fountain there was destroyed by local residents in 2002.
Unfortunately we were unable to visit the Art Museum, as it was closed for restoration.
TIP: The Art Museum is closed on Tuesdays, but do go early to avoid the crowds on the rest of the week.

Footloose in Toulouse, stumbled upon the old Augustinian Monastery now the musee. Fabulous worth the 4 euro to see the building and the cloisters twice over, but the works of art are simply awesome. Much of them Catholic and very impressive. I paid an extra 3 euro for an English transmitter thing very informative and great if you have time on your hands but when I take my husband for the flying visit, there is still so very much to enjoy for a mere 4 euro at speed. Payed 3.90 for a coffee this morning.whats value ???

One of the most beautiful museums I have ever visited
The architecture of this museum is itself a beauty
Artworks, paintings, sculptures of all beauty
The cloister is a little corner of paradise, quiet, green in the middle of the city.
A must see

The architecture of this former monastery is itself more than worth the 3€ entrance price. There are four galleries: Romanesque (12th century) sculptures and Gothic (14th/15th c.) sculptures, paintings from the 17th to 20th c., and combination of the two media from the 15th to 17th c. I was more drawn to the Gothic sculptures, but enjoyed most of the pieces.
The English version of the small guide (included with admission) was helpful, as were more detailed explanations available in various galleries. We spent a couple of hours here, though it's possible to get through more quickly. The museum is open every day (but 1 Jan, 1 May, and 25 Dec) from 10a to 6p. There is an organ concert on Wednesday evening, but we went on a Monday.

This beautiful museum is housed in the 13th -century Monastry and cloister of the Augustine monks and is located at the heart of the city. The red-tiled building is an architectural gem itself. When we visited in the first week of November there was an ongoing exhibition of Theodule Ribot, a French artist of the 19th century. The exhibition was interesting, however, the main attraction in my view is the magnificent building itself and its rich history. Due to its central location and convenient access, it should definitely be on the "must-see" list of every visitor to Toulouse. The admission fee is euro 6.- per person.

Planned to see it, but as usual, the web site says nothing about it being closed indefinitely for repairs. Walked all the way there only to be disappointed.

We were quite excited to visit this gallery as they have a fine collection of French paintings but sadly none of them were on view as that floor is entirely closed until 2019 due to the renovations. So of the 4,000 works held by the museum we saw about 400, and not the ones we wanted to see so our visit was quite short. Not sure whether the 6 euros we each paid for entry was the normal price despite having only a fraction the benefit of the visit. The building is rather gorgeous - splendid cloisters and pretty garden. There's a room with sculptures interspersed with modern lamps and pillars which was okay, some tombs, gardoyles. The large church contains some big religious works, and old paintings of local and French dignitaries and some sections/tables where art students and/or children (or adults if they're so inclined) can get hands on experience of textiles and dies and so on. We paid extra for one audio guide which was not brilliant but okay. All in all a disappointment.
