The welcome was more than unpleasant! We were with our dog (Yorkshire) and barely returned, a lady of a certain age, with a bad look, simply showed us the exit with her finger (arm outstretched) without even saying hello or anything. . When asked what was the matter, she shouted that no dogs were allowed. We have never had such a bad reception! This old lady should rethink the way she receives people. Just before we went to the sanctuary and the guard kindly explained to us that dogs were forbidden, nothing to do with this rigid old lady who looked at us like plague victims. We will have very bad memories of it.

It’s very humbling to be here knowing this is where St.Bernadette and her family lived! It is an understatement to say it is a humble dwelling.

Le Cachot is a stark portrayal of the living conditions of St. Bernadette's family while they were impoverished. The former jail reflects the harsh life they endured and displays it for visitors.

This is the place where St.Bernardette lived with her family after they became broke. Here you can see her shoes and her cloth.
It gives you a clear perspective of the life she lived.

In Lourdes there is a blue line drawn all over the street in town. Follow it and you will get to The Cachot, and other interesting places to visit in Lourdes. All is walking distance. The Cachot was an old prison. Where the family lived is just two rooms; very small. A maybe 30 minutes visit. The lady working there, when we were there, was very friendly, but only speaks French. No entrance fee; they appreciate a donation.

While I enjoyed the story of Bernadette and her family, and was touched by her extreme poverty -- living in a jail for a while when they were thrown out of their home -- being so poor her brother ate melted candlvwax at the local church, etc., I am not a history buff and did not go to Lourdes for that purpose, but rather as a religious pilgrim, so this site, while interesting, took away too much of my time from the Grotto, bathes, churches, rosaries, processions, and Station of the Cross, that are so awe-inspiring.

This is the house that St. Bernadette moved to with her family after they could not afford living in their big house. It is a one room space, well preserved but doesn't have much things to see in.

This should be visited through the Info center to be able to have the full real story. It forms part of Bernadette’s life when she was young.

This is a stop along the trail of Bernadette. This was an old jail that became apartments and after the family mill failed this is where they lived in 2 rooms.

This prison, which was no longer deemed habitable by prisoners, became the Soubirous family home. It was referred to as “a foul and dreary hovel.” It comprised one room only, with a fireplace. Here a family of 6 lived for about 18 months. It is from this location that Bernadette in February 1858 first saw the apparition.
There are exhibits, relating to Bernadette, located next to Le Cachot.
