Lourdes is said to be the place where heaven touches the earth. Whilst the Sanctuary for Christian pilgrims represents heaven, this medieval castle symbolizes the earth
walking in its botanical garden, dwelling in the intimate museum of the Pyrenees, or visiting the Notre Dame du Chateau (where the original tabernacle of St. Bernadette's Church can be admired and the original cross of Jesus and the statues of St. Peter and Paul) is just a celebration for the eyes as they notice stunning views on the beautiful town of Lourdes, the churches & cathedrals, the Sanctuary along the river Gave, and the majestic snow-covered mountains
the local staff doesn't speak much English (hey this is no Chicago), but quite friendly and fairly customer-oriented (not money minded at all), and the General Manager who I believe has a background in the history of fine arts often organizes sublime exhibitions on Lourdes and the Pyrenees
for master Rodin aficionados, there is a sanguine drawing from the sculpture August Rodin tucked in the exhibition room right from the majestic tower. Enjoy your visit in this must see historical monument on your journey toward eternity!

Lourdes is in my top most beautiful towns in the world. The mountains surrounding the town combined with gorgeous cliffs a gorgeous crystal green river running through it and the phenomenal architecture is the reason to come I was blown away. I did not know it would be so beautiful1 It is in my top five most beautiful small towns in the world.

Chateau Fort is the main castle located. in the well known city in the South of France called Lourdes. The castle is a very beautiful building, which you can see from some parts of the town. If you enter, you can visit some rooms and learn about the history of the castle, see very nice views of the town and the important churches and walk in free air, where you can see some models of buildings. Very nice, for me, the best visit in the city. Pitifully, we visit it in a rainy day. Also, my 4 years old daughter enjoyed a lot seeing the rooms, where the princess lived.. :-)

If you are visiting Lourdes on a pilgrimage or just visiting the town do try and make a little time to visit the 8th Century Château fort de Lourdes perched up above the town.
Entrance to the fort is 5 Euros, and for me well worth it, if you do not fancy the steep climb up the stairs there is a very convenient lift right by the ticket booth which will take you straight up to the fort itself.
Once up there you will find this very tight compact little, almost village like, set of buildings, including the Pyrenean museum founded in 1921, also in the heart of the fortress a nice garden area and of course the obligatory gift shop. But what is special are the views from the ramparts, from looking down and across to the Sanctuaries and the basilica, to looking south and seeing the snow capped Pyrenees in the distance, fabulous views.
In 1995 du Château fort de Lourdes was classified as a historical monument, so if you do get the chance do go I am sure you will enjoy it I know I did, and what ever you do don't forget to take the camera for some stunning shots. Enjoy!

We decided that we needed to squeeze in a visit to the Fort purely for the views. How impressed we were with the well marked museum that awaited us at the top and the lovely gardens. Follow the numbers to ensure that you do not miss any part of the self guided tour. The flowers and plants were absolutely beautiful in the small garden in mid-May. We spent an hour enjoying the beautiful views across Lourdes. There was a lift so access for wheelchairs is definitely possible. Staff was also very friendly and helpful. We loved our visit!

The view of the Fort from Lourdes is amazing, the view of Lourdes from the Fort is even better. I was a little disappointed that some of the rooms were very empty of furniture or historic artifacts and some were used as what seemed like empty exhibition spaces.
However, the biggest disappointment was to climb the 140 steps to the top of the Fort thinking I would be able to take an amazing photo of Loureds from it. I can understand for safety reasons why the windows were covered with perspex, but as they were all scratched it made the photo opportunity null and void. Would probably not visit the Fort again.

I was not so interested in the museum part, but the view from the top as well as from one of the towers were amazing! You can see the town and the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes and so on. It is a great fort, indeed. I can simply imagine what it was like in the old days.
To go up, I chose the lift. You can go up by the steps, but it is really steep!

This is a place you must visit. Steeped in history and although it is such a tall building from street level...don't be dismayed...there is a lift inside. When you get to the very top and view Lourdes from all the view points..you will be glad you made the effort. Beautiful individual themed gardens at the very top and lots of seats to relax and absorb your surroundings.

The whole team of the castle and museum Pyrenean is delighted that your visit to our site you liked. We are particularly interested in satisfying our audience and making them discover the history of the Pyrenees

The castle fort dominates the town below. It is an extremely interesting place with views of the town, history of the chateau, mock up of old rooms and much more. It is not a large place but it has been packed full of information and exhibits.
Only €7 entrance fee which is worth every cent. You are given a map and explanation in a language of your choice on entry. The only slight negative is that most of the accompanying exhibit explanations are only in French and no other languages. However this did not detract from this superb place

If you have time to spare, enjoy going to this historic castle! We enjoyed climbing to the top of to get a glimpse of the spectacular view of Lourdes and the Sanctuary of Lourdes. Beautiful! It cost us 14 euros/per person to enter. Slightly costly, but worth it to enjoy the history and the view of Lourdes! You can walk to the castle from the Sanctuary, it is not very far. Once you get to the castle, you have a choice of walking up the stairs to reach the castle front or take an elevator. But once you reach the castle main grounds, know that there are still stairs to get to top of the roof to get a good overview of Lourdes and another set to reach to the top of the tower.

There is an elevator that gets you to the main area but after that there are a lot of stairs. You won't see much more than the a few of the exteriors of the buildings.

We have a parking at the foot of the castle. An ascensseur is available to go up to the 1st floor of the castle however the visit is difficult in wheelchairs, all the pieces are not accessible

Turn left onto Avenue Bernadette Soubirous, then go over Pont Veux, carry on keeping left and go up Rue de la Grotte. When you get to the top keep left, and then take your first left into Rue du Fort. The fort is on your left.
