We were in Biarritz on the Atlantic coast for a couple of weeks. Didn't realise Lourdes was in striking distance of 90 minutes. Is there really a season here? Doubt it, though I imagine festivals are to be avoided. As it was, parking was easy, walking distance to the church and the sunny day had lots of people out and... More

Travelling to Lourdes and the Grotto for the last 15 years with a pilgrimage group. Forget about the merchandising outside of the Sanctuary. Once inside, take in the beauty of Rosary Square during the Torchlight Procession. The peace of the Grotto particularly around 11 at night. Even those who are not religious will take something from a visit to this... More

Quite a disappointment really. The town is very shabby and so full of tacky souvenir shops. The spiritual appears to have given way to the commercial. Made me thing of religion on an industrial scale.

We arrived at night and straight to this place for candle procession, in front of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. I had the goosebumps because thousands of people flock in there and began the procession with many languages. The procession include the rosary and the songs are in many languages too include Ave Maria and Hail Mary in... More

Again, I'm not catholic or religious... A beautiful place. A number of different chapels, cathedrals etc around the site. Plenty of opportunity to part with your hard earned euros too. An offering for this, an offering for that. Candles, holy water, toilets...maybe they could sell some red marble for the upkeep of the site. Plenty of beautiful artwork, beautiful architecture,... Wat a fantastic place to visit very spiritual and uplifting for the soul. I am not a particularly religious person but I felt very humbled and sad for the people with disabilities who went for an answer of some sort everything was accessible while we were there and I managed to get some holy water which was my intention .... We stayed 1 day in Lourdes and visted the grotto and attended mass. This place is packed with people but very peacefull. You can attend a mass if you wish and can choose in different languages, just check the schedule at the gate or at the Lourdes cathedral. I visited this place a 20 years ago and it was not... More

If you come to Lourdes just for sightseeing, you won't get the hang of it - and you might just stay flabbergasted by the souvenirshops. Lourdes gets its meaning from the deeply religious enterprise of thousands of pilgrims who come here out of faith.
