As we walk into the sight of the sancturay, be it in the morning when the sunlight is on the basilica or towards evening when the sunsets behind., the setting is truly beautiful. The sanctuary hold the entire space of the Basilica's, the grotto and the spaces around these areas which are useful for the many sick pilgrims who come to Lourdes seeking healing.

I did not know what to expect entering into the area. It is a lovely area and fairly large. We were able to go into the church and then walked to the grotto where there were chairs in front. We got in line so we could touch the water on the stone wall. Inside you can buy a vial for the holy water if you wish to take some home with you. We sat on a bench and observed for awhile. Before 9:00 people began to gather in lines in front of the church each with a candle with paper cone. The numerous stores outside the Sanctuarie were selling them but we bought ours inside. An long procession began at 9:00 where everyone walked around listening to scripture.
At the end everyone returned to outside the church. The procession was over at 10:00. It was very impressive and touching although I did not understand the French language. I felt it was a once in a lifetime experience.

The sanctuary in Lourdes made a great impression. The complex itself impresses with its majestic basilicas and beautiful architecture. Believers come here from all over the world for prayer and healing. I recommend visiting the spring with water, known for its miraculous properties, which attract pilgrims, as well as the evening processions with light.
The sanctuary in Lourdes is a place where you can find inner peace. Regardless of religious belief, a visit to this holy place leaves an indelible trace in the soul.

Outstanding place to visit.
When my wife suggested we visit it I was underwhelmed. I expected a gaudy, plastic, theme park, rip off.
Lourdes was none of those things. It was just stunning. Even the slightly run down hotels and cafes, which would probably now be best described as shabby chic, weren’t rip offs. Free parking! Not what I expected.
It was, according to my wife, empty. The pandemic has done what nothing else has been able to do the place since Bernadette’s story broke in 1858, that is, stop the masses from going. Yes the loud American’s are still there. Yes the local schools are still there. But not in the numbers you would have expected. No queueing was the order of the day.
The architecture the story the views are amazing.
Don’t hesitate to go and go as soon as you can.
I will never go back but only because it will never be as good again.

The architecture and setting are worth the detour, whatever your religious beliefs. The atmosphere is intense and special even when you are not particularly religious.
Afterwards, outside the sanctuary, the streets of the city center are mainly crowded with hotels and numerous religious businesses.

It is said that if you go to Lourdes it is because you are called by the "Notre Dame de Lourdes".
I made this trip together with the U.N. T.A.L.S. which every year accompanies the sick and pilgrims from all over Italy on this journey by white train.
A journey made of hope, the search for truth and the search for ourselves and the inner pase,
The departure sees two days by train that prepares you for the meeting with the Blessed Virgin Mary and, instead, the return, also two days, is a journey on meditation of the message that wanted to leave the Nostre Dame de Lourdes.
Coming to Lourdes for the first time is, first of all, to look at and discover this sanctuary, visited in 1858 by the Blessed Virgin Mary for eighteen times. It is to feel the faith of the thousands of pilgrims who respond to Our Lady’s call to “come here in procession” and to observe the hope of all the sick pilgrims who have come to seek some comfort at the foot of the Grotto and, why not, the grace of a cure or healing. To observe the charity of all those, volunteers and pilgrims, who come to put themselves at the service of others is to live the Message of Lourdes in action.
Handled with great care, great cleanliness. All adapting to climate of silence, bread, prayer and meditation, even outdoors with the immense greenery.
There is the possibility to go to the pools where you can make the water gesture by giving from a jug water in your hands to wash your face and drink, the bath is provided only for the sick. There is also the possibility, in the evening, to participate in the flambeaux procession.

We bought the 70 KG candle at the church store thinking that it would burn to the ground. 12 hours later we come back and the candle is gone! Someone took the candle. We were told that they throw everything after 3pm that is why it is not there. We lit the candle at 5pm and by 7am the next day is gone. DO NOT BUY ANY OF THE BIG CANDLES. It’s sad that even this pilgrimage site that is supposed to be holy is DISHONEST.

We opted for a Monday to visit after Easter weekend and that was a great choice. The place was un-crowded and there were actually very few tourists. We parked at the bottom of the hill in the first parking lot we came upon and walked the town. The whole place is quite flat and easily walkable. The lady in the information office provided us with a map and it was VERY helpful so we were able to take in all the sights of Lourdes in about an hour at a leisurely pace. This was a place I had always wanted to visit and it did not dissapoint.

My 11th Pilgrimage to Lourdes was so wonderful, words cannot express my feelings. This is a very 'Special' Sanctuary that I haven't experienced in other places. I will always go to Lourdes because Our Lady made all this possible through 'Messages' to Bernadette. Through Mary to Jesus and the Incredible Bond between Jesus and Mary is why our Faith exists in this way. Jesus and Mary are waiting for you... Merci Notre Dame de Lourdes !

The sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes has been a destination for Italian pilgrims for many years and when I was there there was the diocesan pilgrimage of Rome and a white train from Naples. At the cave it is so common to hear Italian spoken. LOURDES is in fact very well known in Italy for the rosary at 6pm live on TV channel 28. I hadn't been to the sanctuary since before Covid and I found some changes. They redid the sacristy and installed night lighting under the entrance arches. I had the disappointment when I went to the swimming pools where since the end of July they have been making the water gesture by giving water from a jug into their hands to wash their faces and drink. I always took a bath in the 10 times I went asking for protection from the Holy Virgin. The new rules no longer allow complete bathing and the sick who in wheelchairs were relieved in body and comforted in spirit will no longer have this grace. It's a shame for this lack of faith.
