- chiaru_2655 contributionsOne day it was raining hard and we took shelter in the basilica of St. Pius X which is very large. It is underground and concrete. There are so many pews and in the center there is the altar. In a short time it was filled with so many people and a celebration began. It is not easy to see well from a distance in fact there are screens to be able to follow better. It is impressive how big it is and how many people it can hold.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 19, 2024
- Dinh Trung-TinToulouse, France635 contributionsThe Basilica of St. Pius X in Lourdes is an extraordinary place of worship that left a deep impression on me. As one of the largest underground basilicas in the world, its sheer size is awe-inspiring, and the modern architectural design is both unique and fitting for such a significant spiritual site. The atmosphere inside the basilica is one of profound peace and reverence. Despite its capacity to hold thousands of pilgrims, the space feels surprisingly intimate, making it an ideal setting for prayer and reflection. The simplicity of the concrete arches and minimalist decor enhances the sense of calm and allows visitors to focus on the spiritual experience. One thing to note, however, is that there were quite a few mosquitoes inside, which was a bit of an annoyance during our visit. While it didn’t detract from the overall experience, it’s something to be aware of, especially if you’re sensitive to insect bites.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 12, 2024

One can only be astonished by the enormity of this underground Basilica. During the current virus it was virtually empty but one cannot imagine the atmosphere that a full attendance would create. Well worth visiting.

This basilica is underground. You’ll never noticed that there is a basilica in the vicinity. Huge basilica with lots of portraits of the different Saints. My first time to see the face of St Boniface. The place is not opened for mass due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, it’s another holy site to visit.

This huge church (?!) underground seems like a failed concert hall. Incredible amounts of concrete were processed here. The very nice line-up and explanation of saints or beatifieds cannot save this. Even if I were Catholic, I would not rate this positively. By the way, we were completely alone down there, although there was a lot going on upstairs. The reviews below are completely uncritical in this sense.

Basilique Saint Pius X is one of the three Basilicas located in the Sanctuary Complex, in Lourdes. It is very big, where the biggest masses are done. In fact, it is underground, very nice and curious place. Also it is a very interesting place for no religious or non-catholics.

Attended the international mass - it was impressive
The church is massive but not intimidating
The design element masks the size
The glass work of the stations of the cross and the mysteries are imaginative and very nice!
The organ is massive and sounds great!

We attended for the International Mass on Sunday at 9.30am at this underground basilica. We arrived at this stunning Basilique 1.5 hours before the mass began. It was really cold since it was raining on that day. So I suggested to bring jackets along if you visit this place around early June.

If you visit Lourdes you should plan to celebrate the Eucharist in this underground Basillica. An emotional and spiritual event , even for this lapsed Catholic.

The Blessed Sacrament Procession into the basilica was beautiful and ended with the blessing of the sick. Truly blessed experience.

Completed in 1958, this humongous, modern concrete church, is part of the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes, a popular pilgrimage destination among Catholics. It was built in anticipation of the large crowds expected to attend during the centenary celebration of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Because of its size, it has had problems with acoustics, open & cold weather and the main altar to be too far to those standing or sitting by the back seats. In the interior, despite the 52 images in stained glass, the whole place appears dark and gloomy. It is however a stunning structure by its mere size, with a seating capacity of 25,000.
