The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is also know as the upper church and is build on top of the rock of the Grotto and clearly seen from the side of the Grotto. Build between 1862 and 1871 , it was consecrated in the year 1876. This minor Basilica is also the second one next to the Basilica of our Lady of Rosary.
The architecture is Neo-Gothic and there is a two ton bell which chimes Ave-Marie every hour. The stained glasses represents the various events at Lourdes with special reference to Mother Mary.

Basilique de l'Immaculee Conception is the biggest church in Lourdes, the well known religious town in the South of France. It was built at the end of 19th Century after the Apparition of the Virgin in the cave under this sanctuary. It is a big and impressive church with a very nice bell tower. Very interesting to do a walk in the surroundings, also for no religious people.

An amazing arrangement of churches in three layers on the side of a mountain, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. A chapel with a church on top and then a basilica underneath built in stages as the site became more popular, making the most of its dramatic setting. Maybe a bit theatrical - Bavarian castles and Disney come to mimd, but this composition of buildings has physical and spiritual integrity which should appeal to spiritual as well as the romantic and curious parts of our nature!

This beautiful basilica is impressive in person. Check the hours as it is closed during the nightly procession. During the second night we were there, we watched the procession from the upper level going up the ramp from the sides. Inside, the basilica is beautiful and peaceful. Underneath, there is a large room that we were told of, but did not get a chance to see it as we were also exploring the villages outside of Lourdes.

Basilique de l'Immacculee Conception is the second church completed in the Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Lourdes. It was built between 1862-1871 and was consecrated in 1876. It has a capacity of 550 worshippers. It is also known as the "Upper Church" and has a 230 ft spire. The 2 shorter spires opened in 1908. The church is 167 ft long and 69 ft wide. Beautiful interior and exterior.

I Remembe been here in the 80's it was nice and comfortable then. This time It was December and the heating was completely inadequate. The Masses were in French and the afternoon were English free.No English masses in the afternoon.I know that it was December but many others felt it could have been better organised.Refurbishment necessary here seating and kneelers veryold fashioned.Pity it has been allowed to get so disheveled.Disappointing!!!.

We did not expect to spend so much time in this whole area. (church where prayers and singing/ candle buying and lighting/ the basilica itself) Take your time there is so much more to see than the cathedral. In addition, you can sit in the park on a bench under the trees to recover. The street you have to walk is not so nice with shops with jerry cans (to fill with holy water) and many Indian restaurants. If you are in the area then you should set aside at least an afternoon for it.

Walk up the basilica and you will definitely get an awesome view of the grounds of this holy place. So serene and peaceful for me. During my visit, they held the procession up to the second floor of the basilica and around. There is a small chapel inside where they had the morning mass.
