STARK IN ITS MAGBNITUDE

We made a brief stop here while traveling through the area. It is another one of those war cemeteries which really displays the costs of war. The cemetery is very well maintained and is a stark reminder to what has happened in the past and hopefully not in the future.

To the victims of Nazi barbarism

It would be a big ask to visit every cemetery dedicated to the fallen of WWI, there are just so many. However Cimetiere Militaire du Faubourg-Pave has some unique features worth visiting. Particularly moving is the memorial to the victims of Nazi barbarism and the 6 guns preserved towards the back of the too-numerous crosses.

If you're visiting the Verdun area then for a number of reasons you should spend time at this cemetery. This is where the remaining 7 unselected French Unknown Warriors are buried under the cross in the centre of the cemetery. There's also a memorial to those executed by the Germans as well as 7 British and Canadian RAF personnel from WW2 (6 formed the crew of one bomber) buried at the far end.

I noticed at the time of our visit (Sept '16) a number of French headstone name plates were missing - not sure if it's part of a refurbishment/replacement programme or if they've been removed by thieves.

We saw this WW I military cemetery was noted in the Michelin Guidebook so we stopped to pay our respects on our way to the battlefields.

Not just a WWI cemetery, research shows it contains the bodies of 5,095 men - 602 from WW II 1939 to 1945. It is one of a number of national cemeteries resulting from deaths in battles fought in the Meuse.

There are two ways to access the cemetery - we stopped on the D603 - Avenue de 30E Corps and parked on the "shoulder" . You can also access it from D630 - Avenue Marechal Joffre.
