I especially appreciated the excerpts from soldiers' letters that are printed on large plaques deep inside the fort. This visit doesn't take long but is well worth your time.

This fort is huge! It's also well worth a visit - you pay to go inside, and can then self-guide around the interior for a 30-minute or 90-minute tour (the latter is done by headphones). It can be a little wet and chilly so take...More

The fort was the scene of several major engagements and was occupied by both the French and the Germans. The landscape and the fort show the massively damaging effects of large artillery shell bombardment. The interior has some props but is mostly a ruined shell....More

Visit Fort Douamont twice. Once in the evening after the crowds have gone to stand on the grounds among the gun turrets And again to tour the bunkers. Imagine 500, then 3000 crowded in as shells blasted overhead. The high ceilings kept air circulation and...More

If you're in the area and have the slightest bit of interest in history, you have to take the time to visit this place. You really can't appreciate the level of bombardment experienced here until you see it.

Decided to visit this fort instead of others as it is the largest in the area. Easily spent an hour inside plus time outside. I really is worth a visit there is so much original inside to see. The paper guide is really excellent and...More

The story of this fort during the battle of Verdun is a "stranger than fiction" moment. If I read it in a novel, I would probably stop reading because the plot was stupid. But it actually happened. When you have that background, it is an...More

Opportunity to see trenches and bunkers used in WWI at this fortification that was one of the ones protecting Verdun; very well maintained; gift short/coffee bar. The elevator was down the day we visited, so be prepared for some stairs. Linger and let the experience...More

It’s so amazing that the fort is still there and we were able to walk inside if it. Saw the kitchen and the bunk rooms. It’s very dark inside, so bring a light or use your phone so you’ll be able to see inside!

I am reasonably sure that you can go to one fort a day. In fact, I'd say it's a good idea to split the days up as there's a pretty big emotional load at each place.
