Free museum entry, free baggage locker and free toilets! Great historical documentation of the area through the ages from tiles, sculptures, tools, jewelry, pottery to paints.
A bit long but you choose your own pace.

This museum presents different periods starting with the Romain empire. This is a free entrance museum.

We only visited the roman baths and the roman sculpture section, which in itself is worth the trip since no other museum, to my knowledge explains so vividly the details of the roman engineering that lies behind the intricate and complex vitruvian mechanics that allowed the bathers to enjoy cold, lukewarm and hot baths. A large section of roman sarcophagi (in lead!) and sculptured stelae describe the way they honoured their dead. There is much more to see in the museum, but, it takes several days to see the collections properly...

I liked learning more about the Merovingian kings and Charlemagne. But though the museum is pretty, and the exhibits displayed well, I didn't like the collection here as much as I did other museums on the same subject, which we visited in the following week or so.

This is a great regional museum with a fantastic collection of Gallo-Roman materials. Some great mosaics. In the basement is a Roman bathhouse and there are some spectacular painted Medieval ceilings and beams. We were there for more than 2 hours. Highly recommended.

Entrance was 3,30 euros and the whole place was really large as it was contained in what used to be a palace. Inside was an archaeological section with several gallo-roman objects and structures including a Mithras altar. Another part, which included medieval objects, included a beautiful granary with gothic arcades beautifully restored and preserved. Finally on the top floor was the section dedicated to fine arts including several paintings with Metz as the subject.

This museum features fragments of a Roman wall. It is well worth visiting to find out more about the history of Metz

Beautiful museum located in a maze of buildings. There are even remnants of an old Roman spa in the cellars to see. There are many stairs and steps yet we have also seen many wheelchair lifts. so it looks accessible for them, though it will be a bit of adventures to get there, but the guards are very friendly and helpful. The museum is free on the first Sunday of the month. We were there that first Sunday at Easter 2018 and it was very quiet in the museum. More guards than visitors. :) Many architectural ornaments and many nice little roman items such as buckles, keys, hairpins, ... There is a provisional entrance 50m down the street at this moment. The museum is near the big cathedral.

Spent more than 1/2 day and could have done more. Lots of walking and unfortunately very little in English. However anyone can get the messages and see how much Roman history is here as well as Metz throughout the ages. Good Jewish exhibit too. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand Metz history throughout the ages.

Got here early one weekday--good thing, because lots of school groups came soon behind us. Large collections of artifacts from Roman times through Renaissance to 1700's, and special room to commemorate the French Jewish population before 1940. Good signage in exhibits too.
