- Mary P5 contributionsStained glass treasureI visited the cathedral in December and there were some lovely Christmas markets close by. The cathedral has the most stained glass of any cathedral in the world over 69,000 square feet. There are a number of artists that designed the glass including Marc Chagall. Although it wasn’t sunny the cathedral was still stunning.Visited December 2022Traveled soloWritten December 9, 2022

It’s also an opportunity to see masterpieces of distinguished artist Marc Chagall who designed some of the stained glass in 1958 and a couple of years after. - Easy Livin’151 contributionsSpectacularThis is a very impressive cathedral. I would say it rivals many more famous ones, in terms of details. This is one of the few cathedrals where I have considered taking a guided tour. There's a few secrets to discover. The artwork and masonry is breathtaking. If you, like us, enjoy gargoyle hunting, and a bit more obscure things than the regular statues you see in many places of worship. This is the place!Visited August 2022Traveled with familyWritten February 10, 2023

It is claimed to have the largest area of stained glass in any church in the world and there was certainly lots of it including some modern examples. We were able to find some designed by Marc Chagall one of our favourite artists. The cathedral is very well set of in a large open square. Very definitely worth a visit if you're in the lovely town of Metz.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 12, 2023
- Sanka1 🇱🇰🇬🇧Bicester, United Kingdom3,342 contributionsAmazing Gothic architectureMetz Cathedral, located in Metz which is between Paris and Strasbourg, is an extraordinary example of Gothic architecture. Its towering spires and intricate stained glass windows are truly impressive. Inside, the Rose Window is a highlight. This cathedral's historical and architectural significance makes it a captivating destination, offering a glimpse into the past. It's free to enter and you can buy and light candles inside. Highly recommended!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 4, 2023

I am so glad that I read something online about Metz and this cathedral. It is amazing. It has the third tallest nave in France, so when you enter the doors, it actually takes your breath away. It also had the largest collection of stained glass in a church, in the entire world. I particularly loved the Marc Chagall windows. We stopped here on our drive from Luxembourg to Colmar. If you are driving in that area, this is an absolute must see.

The building itself is maybe not so impressive as in Reims, but it's stained-glass windows are really impressive. Besides the Roman bath museum, the best attraction. It is a bit labyrinth type of museum, but it has great chronological order plus nice Roma time exhibition. Also the painting section is very good (at least for a small city).

We visited this cathedral in the early evening. There was a lovely atmosphere inside. It is huge and really impressive and well worth visiting. We spent nearly an hour inside. There are also some really nice bars and restaurants nearby which make it a really nice central location to visit Metz.

Seen outside in the night, this-one I think that is the best attraction of the city, unfortunately I didn't have time in day to visited it inside but I know that is particular & well-reccomended it.

We visited the north eastern French city of Metz in August and used it as our base whilst touring the Verdun battlefield.
The Cathedrale St. Etienne is a sight to behold. It dominates the city on its elevated position. It is a Gothic masterpiece with numerous gargoyles, angels, demons, cherubs and devilish-looking creatures carved into its Jaumont stone structure. We stood viewing the exterior for quite some time and studied these figures which were getting up to all sorts of mischief. There are some very bold and austere carved depictions from the Bible; Heaven and Hell being the main theme.. very interesting and stark.
There was no entrance fee (unlike most Cathedrals in Britain!) although certainly we would not have minded paying to see such a wonderful and beautiful building.
The nave of the Cathedral is the 3rd highest in France. It is very long and very high which gives the building an airy and ethereal ambiance. The religious wooden carvings within the building were excellent and are ancient, having lovely facial expressions.
The stained glass windows were immense and stunning. The cathedral has the largest stained glass expanse in the world. We studied the numerous carvings and marveled at the architecture which dates back in some parts to the 13th century. This cathedral is truly an amazing and impressive religious building. I also liked to see the cobwebs on a wooden statue which looked natural and as if it had been left undisturbed for centuries.
(One tip though! Dress conservatively and cover shoulders. Thin strapped 'T' shirts or shorts are not deemed respectful although no member of staff or the clergy said anything. Other visitors, though, were a little disdainful of ladies dressed in that style.)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Metz; the city is steeped in history and is rich in culture on which it prides itself with many houses and halls dedicated to the arts.
We spent a day walking through the town's vibrant shopping district. As evening descended we stopped at one of the numerous al fresco cafes and restaurants in one of the pedestrianized squares. The city is very attractive and smart but full of charm and character. Most of the buildings, like the cathedral, are built from the local stone of Jaumont. It is rather like another famous city, 'Bath' stone, and is a lovely ochre-yellow giving the buildings a pretty glowing mellow-aged look.
I would strongly recommend a visit to Metz with it's unique cathedral.

Yes, you are right; this monument is absolutely splendid to visit
Hi, I am wondering how this church compares to Saint Chapelle in Paris? I know I loved that one, but I would rather see a new church. However, with our 11 year old daughter along this time, and a limited itinerary, would you recommend we take her to St Chappelle (despite it not being new to my hubby and I), or to Metz Cathedral (if it is on par, more or less). I'd love to hear your opinion (or that of any others who have been to both). Thanks!

Oh boy oh boy. Sainte Chapelle wins hands down over any church anywhere. Make sure she knows a little of its history, it makes it even better. And the Conciergerie it worth a run through too since you would’ve right there. But I am puzzled by “limited itinerary” as Metz and Paris are far apart.
