A surprise for everyone. The outside is quite plain but the interior is richly ornate. Discovered this by riding the little tourist train which revealed an area of the city that I was unaware of as we just went walking on a free day from planned trips. The area around the cathedral has many lovely restaurants and cafes to rest you weary bones.

This is certainly a beautiful church worthy of exploring. You definitely get a feel that it was meant to be a bit bigger, but, it has a lot of amazing art in every nook and cranny. One really interesting item is an apparent crypt cemented in by a covering with four skull and crossbones figures - one on each corner. Being close to the sea, it makes you wonder...

For several centuries there used to be a small church there but in 1324 king Sancho of Mallorca started the construction of this temple in a Gothic style. Himself was sort of an anomaly characteristic of the medieval period. From the house of Aragon , a few years early one of his ancestors had bequeathed this territory north of the Pyrenees ,along with Mallorca, to one son, and Sancho was part of that short lived experiment of royal dictate, that afterward reverted to the crown of Aragon por quite a few centuries more. Nevertheless, the cathedral project was grandiouse. It was to rival the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, but between these events and deaths from the black plague there were delays and cost overruns until finally, in the middle 1400's the project was formally stopped half way. That is why the main body dimensions are only half of what they should be giving a sensation of visiting half a building. Unique. And that is how it has remained . Enormous at it is, it was not consecrated as a formal functioning church until 1504. It is a pity, because there are not medieval glass windows and the rest of the decoration is from quite a few centuries later (the tower XVIII) all the way until the XX. The organ dates from early 1500's. It is a building worth a visit and a recapitulation of human folly and destiny of original ideas

This Cathédrale looks plain on the exterior-no interesting architecture or carvings or gargoyles, so when we we walked in-WOW!! Beautiful and ornate! And I’ve never been in any church where every nave and side chapel had an explanation of the imagery.

My sister and I visited the cathedral during a day trip to Perpignan during a week's holiday in the region. We were both quite disappointed with our visit to this cathedral.
On arrival, outside the cathedral there were limited signs giving details of the opening hours. We only because aware that the cathedral was open to visitors at that time when other people were leaving the cathedral.
On entering the cathedral, there were no signs giving any tourist information at all or any tour guides present. We walked around the cathedral ourselves & enjoyed looking at the stained glass windows and different displays. However, it was difficult to understand any specific details about the cathedral and it's history as all the displays were in French. I appreciate that Perpignan is a French speaking town but I feel that our experience would of been enhanced if information leaflets had been available in English and other languages. (Whilst out and about in Perpignan we heard voices of other nationalities).
After viewing the cathedral, we decided to light a candle and say a prayer in memory of some relatives. It was a bit off putting that signs stated that you had to "buy" a candle to light. It would of been more appropriate to ask for donations.
Overall, we were both disappointed and a bit upset by our visit to this cathedral. We did not feel welcome at all and felt our trip was quite negative compared to what experience other cathedrals offer their visitors. Finally, there was no visitors book on display to complete on leaving.

Impressive cathedral. Sadly, a lot of nice cathedrals start to blend together when you tour around Europe but the detail and stained glass windows on this one stood out for some reason. It’s a definite must for this city but not reason enough to go out of your way to Perpignan in the first place.

We have visited Perpignan every year for about 10 years and had never been to the Cathèdrale Saint-Jean until now.
It is the most stunningly beautiful place, the architecture and the stained glass windows are absolutely breath taking. There are candles on your right as you enter which you can light in memory of a loved one - these cost €2.
I was blown away by the grandness and magnitude of the building. It is truly stunning and well worth a visit.

We never heard of this cathedral, frankly before the visit we never heard of Perpignan. This cathedral is simply stunning! A great place to sit and breath, enjoy architecture and imagine past times.
