This revamped and greatly extended central museum of Perpignan is wonderful. I went a few years ago and being quite impressed with the collection, the displays were dark and the whole place felt as if it was hung over from the 19th century. Today, it is airy, light and spacious with outside courtyards strategically displaying Maillol’s bronzes. And one can take photos. The permanent collection of paintings and sculptures ranges from local modest but talentd artists like Terrus to world famous names; Dufy, Maillol, Picasso, to name but three. There are temporary exhibitions that have equally professional emphasis and recently the film poster artist Antoni Clavé fills the hall. This is not a museum where your legs and brain tire before the end of the visit. I love it and felt stimulated to know more about the local talented artists

Like most Perpignan places of interest, the museum is in a historic building in the heart of old town. The permanent collection is small but nice. There is a room for Picasso ceramics, something most people don't know about him. Picasso was fond of Perpignan and stayed in this mansion for a time. The special Raoul Dufy exhibit was well designed and provided a good retrospective look at the artist's evolution. There were some surprising works such as tapestries. Art museums are one of the 3 things I do when I am visiting places, and this is one you should see in Perpignan.

I went to the museum, probably like most people, to see the Picasso exhibition. That is quite good in the overall sense of getting an idea of what he did in the area. There are good descriptions and an excellent photo trail, though the works leave one feeling a little wanting. However this is a regional museum and it isn;t fair to expect to see the big pieces.

BUT make sure you see the rest of the museum because it absolutely blew me away. Now I am no massive art lover or intellectual but there are quite a few other things that you really must see:
1. Religious Art - yes, sounds very dull doesn't it? But actually they have some beautiful pieces here and even though I am not from a Christian faith background, they were well displayed and explained and actually marvellous works of devotion.
2. The paintings of Rigaud in room 7, especially his self-portraits are some of the most captivating works I have seen. You can walk right up to them and see the stunning brushwork. They are so lifelike that it will amaze you. Just look at the eyes, they are sheer genius.
3. In room 17 is a eclectic collection of small paintings, some interesting, some a bit dull, but all together they form a fascinating collection.

So go for the Picasso but walk away amazed by Rigaud. I was, I really really was!

A small, friendly and rather provincial museum. Not one to make a trip for, but if you are in Perpignan and love Art - go by all means

Le Musée d’art Hyacinthe Rigaud is a newly-opened museum in Perpignan, in a restored old house. And what better way to kick start this new venue than with an exhibition about Picasso in Perpignan?

Since Picasso lived such a long life and was so productive, it's not difficult to find his work and curators can afford to be really quite specific (for instance, next spring promises us Picasso in 1932 as a blockbuster at Tate Modern in London).

This is an interesting selection, with works created during and linked to his visits to the city from 1953-1955.

As I was reading Jack Flam's excellent Matisse & Picasso at the same time as our visit – it explores their rivalry and friendship, and how they spurred each other on – it was fascinating to see some of what Flam writes about in some of these works.

Works that, for instance, have decorative backgrounds – a particularly Matissian approach that Picasso poo-pooed – except when he then adopted it himself.

And if Nude in a Turkish Hat, finished in 1955, the year after Matisse had died, doesn't nod toward 1905's seminal works, Woman in a Hat (in the size of the hat) and Portrait of Madame Matisse (in the green on the face), then it's hard to know what does.

After spending 90 minutes or so with Picasso, we decided to pass over the early part of the permanent collection and opt just for the most modern era.

There is a very good room of Maillol, a pair of Gauguin woodcuts – particularly unexpected – a little Dufy and a welcome collection of paintings by Etienne Terrus, from nearby Elne, while among the painters we 'discovered' was George-Daniel de Monfreid. The museum has one page of studies of the Collioure bell tower by Matisse.

It's a very pleasant building; the first exhibition is excellent and the permanent collection worth looking at. My one gripe was that the Terrus works were displayed in a cluster, so that some were rather too high to see properly (the same problem is true at the Tate Modern and I don't care if that's how Gertrude Stein arranged her front room).

Not year's main exhibition will be Dufy – and that will ensure a return visit.

We discovered this museum just a few doors down from our holiday apartment in Perpignan last week and found an excellent temporary exhibition of Rodin's works on the top floor. Thoughtfully displayed, well lit and with very welcome air-conditioning on a hot day. One of the highlights of our stay in the south of France.

The first thing I would like to say is how friendly and helpful the staff were at this museum. They went out of their way to assist us even though our French is spotty at best. I'm an art history buff and I was really impressed with their small, permanent collection. I was exposed to iconography in some of the Gothic works that I hadn't come across before, which was refreshing and fascinating for me. Anyone familiar with Rigaud's work will appreciate the selection of his pieces here. The room we enjoyed most however was from the collection of Maitre Rey which has numerous small format works. If you're visiting Perpignan or are within the vicinity and enjoy art, it's worth the trip.

Once again, the MAHR in Perpignan offers a wonderful experience with its newest exhibit dedicated to Raoul Dufy. I had the pleasure to view the wonderful Picasso exhibit last year, and this year’s retrospective of the Fauvist artist is equally enjoyable. On display are colorful paintings of the region Dufy created while living in Perpignan; and light, airy and delicate bouquets of flowers. Bravo to MAHR for sharing such a special collection.
The museum shop offers an interesting selection of books and gifts related to the exhibit.

Perpignan needed its own art museum, and the newly opened MAHR offers visitors a wonderful collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings by famous artists, some of them locals. What a gorgeous place! The current Picasso exhibit is beautifully done, showing movies and photos of the artist visiting close friends in Perpignan. The museum's airy layout, bright rooms, and printed information allow visitors to experience the artwork in a comfortable fashion. No museum visit is complete without a stop in the shop! Interesting book selection, though more gift items are needed. Perpignan can be very proud of its new art museum! We'll be back.
