The new `old` town of Carcassonne La Bastide, is a complex of intersecting streets making it appear slightly maze-like. It`s narrow roads all trying their best to confuse you into making a wrong turn. So take your street map and after you`ve walked through it once or twice, you should find your way around. We spent a bit of time... More

Not worth the car parking charge. Run down back streets. Main square ok but very busy. Some nice clothes shops but not much else. Why go here when the medieval city is over the river.

A lovely enclosed part of the town, lots of places to eat and shop. We arrived while a Spanish festival was on and were treated to a free concert while we had lunch. Well worth a trip if you are visiting La Cite in Carcassonne

As many Bastides in France good for nice strolls, in the shadow when it is hot, lovely market, heeps of possibilities to sit outside and enjoy a coffee or two, reading a book or mails ...

It is nothing special. In the brochures described as a "must" to see, but if you walk around you will find a more or less typical French city. It was far away from our expectations.

Similar to many French/Spanish/Italian towns - if you've never been to a place like this before you'll find it interesting - otherwise its very similar to what you've probably seen before and not overly interesting in any way.

Visitors who would like to learn more about the Bastide Saint Louis have two options : The tourist office at Porte de Narbonne offers a guided walk covering both the Cité and the Bastide. The tour lasts two and half hour and given the limited number of participants reservations are highly recommended. The tourist office at rue de Verdun rents... More

Having left the rather commercialised medieval cite it is a pleasure to wander into the Bastide and find the real heart of the town. Lovely shops and boutiques and Place Carnot is a must if you want to sit in the sun with a cold drink and watch the world go by. Not to be missed is the market -... More
