The Bastide is the town of St Louis situated below the citadel, The Bastide was originally a fully walled town built on a grid pattern which you can still see today though the cross streets often have little cars speeding along them between the main boulevards of the city. The central Square is Place Carnot and during my visit there... More

The Bastide was built in the 13thC on a strictly rectangular plan laid out around the central square, Place Carnot. It pales by comparison with the near-by Cite but is worth a wander round if you have the time to spare.

We walk through town thanks to a tourist map from tourism info. There are some nice buildings and it's very quiet compare to the medieval town.

This was a charming area to walk around in during the day. Many shops and restaurants to check out if you haven't made any plans. There is even an alright art gallery that you can go to for free that takes about an hour or so to see.

I am staying in the Bastide and I enjoy the markets and the meat and fish shops. Can be a bit dodgy at night though.

As we were staying in the Bastide area of Carcassonne, we enjoyed walking around the narrows street and came upon this main square where local children were playing and a carousel was running. The tourist office has an informative brochure and map that outlines walking routes through the Bastide area of the city. The map was an invaluable help in... More

This area of the newer city is full of shops and restaurants and you can spend a pleasant half day meandering around the shops and we enjoyed a pleasant lunch sitting outside in the main square watching the world go by.

The new `old` town of Carcassonne La Bastide, is a complex of intersecting streets making it appear slightly maze-like. It`s narrow roads all trying their best to confuse you into making a wrong turn. So take your street map and after you`ve walked through it once or twice, you should find your way around. We spent a bit of time... More
