Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. See a 12-minute film combining 3-D images and close-up footage; walk along the galleries, the fortified walls and the north ramparts; discover the museum of masonry and many other attractions. A fantastic cable with a well organised route to visit it...

Interesting history, some great reconstructed woodwork demonstrating historic practises, and spectacular views out across the region.

Hard to believe how this amazing castle was built so long ago. It is a real treasure. There are wonderful restaurants to eat at and some shopping as well. A must visit if in the area.

Whilst visiting the walked city, it is worth paying to go inside old chateau and walking the ramparts etc. Made our day even more memorable.

It is now more than 20 years that I have been coming to this region. Every year I spend at least one day visiting La Cite. It is probably at its' best at the moment (2016). IOt went through a period of just being a series of outlets for plastic souvenirs, but, thanks to the city council, it has turned... More

I feel a little unworthy to rate this only as Average but here goes. On the plus side it is certainly the most visually stunning medieval castle I have seen. It is a proper castle with the usual high walls, turrets, moats and spectacular views to the mountains and surrounding area. I also thought the entry price at Euro 8.50... More

This place is amazing. Beware however if anyone in your party can't walk uphill on cobblestone. Anyone that needs assistance would not have an easy time here. There are buggy and tram rides available however.

We visited here on a Saturday, we parked in an underground carpark about 10 mins walk from the cite medieval, for around 5 hours it cost 5.50 euro. Car park was immaculate, well lit with hood size bays. We wandered the streets of the cite medieval, touristy shops and many restaurants - a lovely atmosphere. We visited the chateau, children... I had wanted to visit Carcassonne ever since seeing pictures of it year ago and was not disappointed. If you're here, absolutely spend time in the Chateau Comtal and walking the walls (as well as visiting the church). You do need to pay and we found the line moved fairly quickly first thing in the morning. We rented headsets and... More

Difficult to had some info in addition to the other reviews. I just encourage you to go and see this site and to walk on the walls. The weather was quite sunny and it was hot waiting for the tickets outside in the sun but it's fast forgotten when you are inside.

The site is exceptional. Best visited out of the main tourist season when the narrow streets and squares are heaving with visitors but the cité always exudes lots of charm.
