We went to the Cite about mid-morning. If the steep walk up is difficult there is a train which goes along the lower streets around the Cite. We did the horse drawn cart between the inner and outer walls. It is in French only but we picked up bits and pieces. A good introduction. We them headed for the Citadel... More

I had been warned about the hordes of tourists making the place insufferable, but that many people are to be expected in such an exceptional Unesco labeled site! The cité is beautiful, uniquely well-preserved, and also not as whimsically restorated as I had been told - apart from the rooftops everything is quite authentic. The guided visits offered by the... Beautiful wall city, but very busy in high season. Surprisingly reasonable to eat out, with good value menu deals. Took little train which, at just over 7 euros, was expensive. Only drove around the base of the walled city, which could easily be walked. Disappointing!

A must see if you are in the region - it is like being in the game of thrones. They have a show with jousting and Chevaliers that is a must tool

I had always wanted to visit Carcassonne since reading the Kate Mosse book Labyrinthe, and was not disappointed when I finally did. We had a weekend break to the area in April and we're delighted with the warm weather we experienced, ideal time of the year as there is a lot of walking. Also although busy wasn't packed as in... We visited the Medieval City, which is free to enter, and also paid to go in the Castle, which proved worthwhile. You can walk around the inner and outer walls, and up and down the castle towers - some high steps, so you need to be fit! - and get some fabulous views of the castle turret, the surrounding countryside,... This place looked good from the outside but got even better once we entered the city. Having come here after reading books by Kate Mosse we were not disappointed.

A delightful walk through the Middle Ages. A lovely restoration of a typical French medieval citadel.

This is really commercial and touristy site. Like visiting Disney Land. The castle itself is worth visiting though, and a beautiful place. Just don't bother going inside to the shops and restaurants.

Went there since we were in the neighbourhood and heard all great stories. Maybe that's why I can't give more then an average; we expected more bases on the things we heard. Nevertheless it was an experience we wouldn't miss. Altho the most of La Cité was build / renovated later, it does give you a good idea of the... More
