So many of them

Scattered all about LANGUEDOC. So impressive evoking a savage history. Glorious drives in the Pyrenees to get there.

These castles must been seen, tourists information will provide you with a list. The castles in the Pyrenees are out of this world, need to be seen to be believed. Get out there and enjoy.

We visited the Cathar site at Lastours, a short distance from Carcassone. The parking was some distance from the visitor centre / entrance, but was a pleasant walk. Access to the site was via the visitor centre, and was not expensive -- the paths and ruins have to be maintained! Reaching the 4 separate castles involved some strenuous walking on... More

This visit is not for the faint-hearted; it is not easy to access the castle but the effort is well worth it. There are magnificent views from the castle and the remains are interesting ans thought provoking. You get a good audio-guide for the visit.

We visted this after the medieval cite and this was just as interesting. Unfortunately due to it being end of season a lot of the shops and cafes were closed so we didn't eat or shop there. But the historical elements is very good. Parking is free and it's free to enter.

Beautiful castle with many alleys and many shops, cafes and restaurants when you are inside. So many beautiful things to buy too and the castle itself is big so you'll get lost so get the map. It is like a puzzle for me to go the entry or the exit.

There are many varied castles built by the Cathars in the Carcassonne region. Some more remote than others. My favourite is Peyrepertuse, more difficult to access than some but very dramatic.

Do at least three of the Cathar Chateaus, we did four - you really only can fit two in a day. We also visited Rennes des Chateau - a definite one to visit. Prices are cheap to enter these places but worth the money.

The castles are on a hilltop accessable by a hard path with steps, it will take 45 mins to climb. Not for the faint hearted or physically challenged. It can be very hot there too. Marvellous views of all the castles and environs are available at a small charge from a Belevere on the opposite hilltop.

A guided tour as part of a guided trip of 4 sites - some from a distance. Only one castle - the last and smallest actually fairly complete and walked though; Worth the effort..
