Cathar Castles - or remains of.

A guided tour as part of a guided trip of 4 sites - some from a distance. Only one castle - the last and smallest actually fairly complete and walked though; Worth the effort..

Take your time to visit these castles, they only have two things in common - one that they were built in the Cathar era and two, they are all in stupendous locations. Allow one day to visit each one that you wish to visit. Las Tours is probably the easiest to access and Queribus is maybe the most challenging. Choose... More

Although we queued for About 40 minutes for Entrance tickets and Audio guides, it was well worth while. 2 hours numbered tour, explained to origins, modifications and restorations to one of Europe's Gems. Restored to great detail, with many original features you begin to see that this is, in fact, a carefully designed Defense Machine. Layer upon layer. Well worth... More

There are many 'Cathar' castles in the south-west of France, though not all are truly Cathar, having only been used by them, not built. You can get a 'passport' for €2 to see all the twenty-one castles and abbeys in Languedoc-Roussillon, shaving a euro off the entry price while entitling you to take a child free of charge. It's a... Staying in the region on a driving holiday, Diane & I visited several of these mountain-top medieval castles. Stunning views (not to mention the sheer drops!) made for exciting visits and days to remember.

I was pleasantly surprised by the condition and access this castle provides. With small exceptions the entire rampart area is available to visitors to walk allowing you an impressive view of the whole valley. The main keep itself is used for local performances so it it still feels alive. If you love architecture the towers, inner roof construction is well... More

Drive to Lastours and visit the four (although one is off limits for construction work) Cathar castles. The walk is pleasant and not too strenuous (uphill) but on a hot day you will sweat. However, you will get a lovely breeze chilling down at the so called 'Witches Grotto' and at the second castle (right hand fork off the main... More

A good walk around four Cathar remains, but you need to be reasonably fit. The cost is 6 Euros and includes access to the best panoramic viewpoint after your walk

It is possible to visit or view several castles - Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Montsegur, Foix and Arques among others. If you have the chance, take the walk (a little bit of work) up to the top to get the view and learn about how they defended themselves. Lovely countryside. There are books available that give a good (brief) history that is... More
