A good walk around four Cathar remains, but you need to be reasonably fit. The cost is 6 Euros and includes access to the best panoramic viewpoint after your walk

It is possible to visit or view several castles - Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Montsegur, Foix and Arques among others. If you have the chance, take the walk (a little bit of work) up to the top to get the view and learn about how they defended themselves. Lovely countryside. There are books available that give a good (brief) history that is... More

In 2014, we climbed up to the first two castles, but in 2015 conquered all four! The ground can be rough, and there are areas where there is no handrail, but it is easily manageable with care.

One of my interest is the Cathars, so to visit these magnificent buildings is wonderful. Spread out there are so many to see. However I find Carcassonne the most disappointing with its Disney World feel!

We climbed to several Cathar castles, they are a bit of a drive but if you are interested in medieval history they are a big part of it. When I heard the story of the Cathars I had trouble sleeping after. The castles have a tragic history but their ruggedness and remoteness and the land around them makes them absolutely... More

Our hotelier advised to visit some of the Chateaux south west of Carcassonne. Easy to understand the strategic importance of the places, but the resources that went into their construction is hard to imagine.

Stayed here for 2 nights during our trip to visit Carcassonne. Very cozy place with all of the modern amenities you need, including washer/dryer and speedy wi-fi throughout the entire house. Also got a welcome bottle of wine and soft drinks for kids. Ash was very nice and responsive host. Would love to come back. Highly recommend!

We visiting only Château de Puilaurens. Each castle is a fair piece from another and the drive to any one of them is considerable. The hike to the top was easy for those in good shape. It is not suited for the elderly. There are exposed tree roots and uneven steps cared into the stone. The views at the top... More

We deliberately returned this year to see some of the amazing castles perched high on unfeasible rocky outcrops. See them we did and I can tell you they were worth it. They had to be - the walk up and down those rocky outcrops is energetic! They are in varying states of (dis)repair but they all have incredible views. Naturally... More
