The original church is was probably built in the 6th century, as an Ostrogothic church. It was replaced by a Carolingian building, of which no traces remain. The current building was started in 1096, and it was converted into Gothic style in the 13th century. It underwent several reworkings in the following centuries, and works are still going on as of April 2024.

There are some remarkable stained glass windows in the choir, dating from 1280, and several statues, tombs, chapels worth seeing.

It is worth a look but since there are major renovations going on you cannot properly see the Basilica. Hopefully now in 2024 it is done.

Beautiful catholic cathedral in the medieval city of Carcassonne. It has services on Saturdays and Sundays but you can go in anytime to look at the beautiful stained windows and architecture so long as you are respectful.

Beautiful church in the busy fortified city. The windows are remarkably stunning. Went a few times during our trip to admire the beauty and peace and light candles. Just a shame it can feel very busy as everyone gathered at the square seem to go in out of curiosity. Best enjoyed during the Sunday mass.

A 13th century Gothic church located in the medieval town. I think it is heavily reconstructed. The huge rosettes are very interesting, which I have not seen in other places

Even though there were plenty of people inside the church, it had a very peaceful atmosphere. Free to enter and have a look around the architecture or just sit peacefully for a while.

This is a nice Gothic church in the fortified old town of Carcassonne. The stained glass is pretty and the church is free to visit so if you are in the old town you should stop inside.

Beautiful Gothic-Romanesque Basilica located inside the walled citadel of Carcassonne. Construction was completed in 1100s and served as the cathedral of Carcassonne until 1803. It was renovated in the 1840s and became a basilica in 1898. Gorgeous stained glass windows.
