It was more than a tour. we had a vip visit with Karine, a real guardian guide. We have learnt about the culture and way of life as much as we have enjoyed the visit. really a great great guide.

I went on the Thursday trip (50 euros) which lasted almost 5 hours touring the farmland and visiting a couple of farms to see the bulls and horses, plus a short stop for a glass of wine and slice of sausage. As I was the only English speaker in the party, the guide spoke mainly in French, so I didn't pick up much of the great detail he was explaining about the area. He did try to give me a brief outline of what he'd been telling the others, when I asked. The main photo opportunity was the last stop where the 'gardians' were charging the horses through the water towards us several times.

Our problem with this tour was that it was an extremely hot day (it usually is!) and we were not advised to bring water nor was there any made available during the 4 hour trip. Nor were any 'conveniences' provided at any of the stops. We had four bench seats in the back of an old land rover which proved to be extremely uncomfortable on the very bumpy dirt roads and from which we could not see out without lowering our heads sideways. We could stand up and look out through the roof but with nothing to hold onto it was a precarious if not slightly dangerous option! Having travelled to Aigues Mortes by boat along the canals I was hoping to see more of the rest of the countryside but the tour was mainly centred along the canal with visits to places I had already seen, including the 'tasting of regional products' which was a very meagre and somewhat reluctant offering of wine and sausisson at a shop I had already visited twice. We had been particularly attracted by the advertised pictures of flamingoes and whilst we understand that bird sightings can never be guaranteed there was no apparent interest in sighting any birds - only Bulls (at a considerable distance) and horses (particularly tamed by being constantly fed bread) and gardians (Cowboys) whose possibly interesting 'unique moments' were incomprehensible even to me as a reasonable French speaker. The extra we paid for 'prestation authentique' proved to be a well staged event with a family of gardians escorting their 10 horses swimming across 20 meters of canal and back - which was nice to watch but hardly constituted the advertised 'mares with their foals galloping in the marshes'. We were a family group of five and it was a bit of an endurance test for each of us (wondering just how much longer we could endure the discomforts) and when the really good bit was going to come. Unfortunately it disappointed all round.

This 'safari' was certainly not as advertised or promoted by the brochure. We expected to see the wild horses galloping, and bulls in an open range setting, but instead we got a ride along bumpy back farm roads where the bulls and horses were in fenced areas. Our guide was friendly and informative, but I had learned more from my personal research of the area. Be sure to bring a bottle of water, but don't drink too much since there are no facilities available along the tour route.

Our italien guide Andrea was marvellous. If you book the tour try to go on his car. He explained not only the nature and history, but also about the today's life and the actual events running in the villages around. Roland
