The Galerie des Batailles (Battles Gallery) is a fine collection of paintings, which intend to glorify French military history. Here you will find a 120 meter long gallery, which includes 120 paintings, busts and references to French military achievements from the Battle of Tolbiac (496) to the Battle of Wagram (1809). The paintings are organised in a chronological order allowing you to browse through the stages of history from a military success point of view.
The gallery was designed and commissioned in 1833 by Louis-Philippe and was opened to the public in 1837 as part of the inauguration of the Museum of French History. The Battles Gallery was seen as a a highlight of the museum at that time and it is difficult to see it as anything less than that now, particularly if you are interested in the subject matters of war, military history or French history in general.
Of the paintings on display, only four existed prior to 1833. These include Austerlitz ( Gérard), The Entry of Henri IV into Paris (Gérard), Bouvines (Horace Vernet) and Fontenoy (Horace Vernet).
The remaining works were painted within the gallery between 1834 and 1845 by important history painters of that time.
Overall, we very much enjoyed the works of the Battles Gallery. While the overall quality of some of the paintings didn't seem comparable to what you can see in many of Paris' fine art museums, the collection as a whole was comprehensive and generally impressive. It is a place that is welldeserving of your time when visiting Versailles.

After you mind has been rather blown by the Chateau - you move to this Galerie, installed by Louis Phillipe many years after the revolution when the chateau was used more for public good -
it doesn’t have the same gratuitous over the top decor for decor sake - it feels more like an exceptional documentary of the wars of france
The paintings really are magnificent
The story they tell a is awesome (of course all in favour of france, but that is to be expected)
My sons were transfixed - and this was after 90 mins in the chateau and they were ready to go
I think it might be my favourite part - of the whole day - but maybe that is just the reaction my sons had, that made me love it so much

These galleries are amazing! The paintings of all French’s military battles from medieval times to 1830 are all massive and each is a masterpiece in its own right! A must see!

With lots of large art pieces you can enjoy, however to a non-artistic person, you might probably just walk pass it quickly. One good thing is they got seat to let you sit and listen to audio guide.

The best gallery that i have ever been in my life. Trough this huge room the France histary is narrated by huge paints from 500 B.C. until the 1800 B.C. It is more large than the mirror gallery and according to me it is more beatifull and well made!

Stunning and mesmerizing. It is part of the palace grandeur which is worth enjoying. The audio guide helps to learn the history about the place.

The gallery is beautiful architecturally. There are paintings along both sides of the gallery of some the most important battles of the time. The paintings are very large and so impressive. They are beautifully painted and I was fascinated.
A must see!
