The gardens are chaotic. They begin from the palace and they extend so much that you start to wander where is the start and where is the end. There are many flowers,fountains and sculptures. Be prepared to walk a lot.
Visited on a foggy, rainy day in December and it was still awesome.
The grounds are immense. There are ponds, fountains and statures everywhere.
Orderly forest paths branch off from the center walking path and can provide a mini-adventure of their own.

Versailles Gardens is the one of my fav places in Paris. Although there are lots of great gardens in Paris, Versailles is different with its history and weight. Would recommend to take bicycles to look around, otherwise it may take whole day to walk around....More
The gardens were kind of bleak when we were there in late october. Unannounced, it was MUSICAL FOUNTAIN day so my Paris museum pass didn't cover the gardens. Unfortunately for 8.50 each more only saw one musical fountain.... that was a bummer, and no flowers...More
