The Gare Montparnasse is one of the 6 travelling hubs in the city of Paris. If you are going to Versailles during the day, this is probably the local where you will embark. It takes around 30 minutes or more to Versailles. Make sure you go to the bathroom first, as we didn't find one inside the train. Also, ticket will cost around

This is a place with restaurants and several platforms, so you need to be careful to where you are going and if you are taking the right train. Bathrooms are paid.

This station is huge, and it takes a good 10-15 minutes to walk from one end to the other. It has pretty good signage for all the Metro lines. However, you need to be well prepared to go up or down a couple of levels if you are trying to find your way over the Paris Transilien suburban rail network operated by the SNCF.
I took Metro Line 4 to this station, but they only show you the general direction of the SNCF lines or Line N. I thought I have gotten lost at least twice while finding my way to that side of the station. Simply put, the way to Line N from most of the Metro side is NOT straightforward.

Prepare first and your experience will be fine. Get the map of the location and know you won’t get a platform confirmed until it’s time to board. This is so the disembarking people can clear the platforms before the embarking people stream in. Sensible when you understand why. We were treated to a rendition of the theme to Inception played by a talented young guy on the free to play piano while we watched the monitors. Yes it’s a rush to get onto the train and the first class cabins are at the very end of the TGV platforms so that’s a bit of a mess, but once on board it’s all over!

Train staff extremely unhelpful, losing their temper with me when their tickets dont work. No assistance or guidance on how to deal with issues other than reassurance that there wouldn't be an issue (I think to get rid of me). People at barriers for SNCF downright rude (ticket didn't work so woman Manning first class barrier told me to go away). My ticket was booked but it meant the train manager had to search for it by my name before they could confirm (their response after queuing up for fifty minutes for ticket office was to try to send me back there).

This is a super busy train station and can be quite overwhelming with huge crowds especially on weekends. Not many places to sit, even in cafes, so one has to go outside for a rest. But there are lots of choices on the streets around. Lots of metro lines come here. Arrive with determination.

If you need to go South/South West in France or locally to other metro or train stations around Paris, this is one of the 6 train stations in Paris. It is conveniently located next to Tower Montparnasse. I used line 9 to go to Versailles as I learned that other lines/trains also go that route throughout the day. The station is very large with multiple entrances, floors as the train platforms located at lower ground platform with plenty of shops, restaurants and a Smoking lounge at terminal 2 to relax where car rental offices are located. I purchased my Navigo train pass card at lower floor in Hall 1 near South entrance/Montparnasse Tower side. A person will help you buy Navigo physical card if it's your first time. After that you can recharge it as needed at any Blue/White Navigo vending machines.

A perfect CHAOS, is the correct adjective for this station that combines all public transport in the city of Paris.
Although there is an area that functions as a shopping mall and this is quite pleasant and has a lot of options, the truth is that everything else is degrading.
Dirty, old, shabby space with hygienic conditions, which leaves many 3rd world cities in good standing next to it.
To help, the information desks are almost always closed, even at busy times, and the individuals wearing red vests, who are supposed to help those in need, can barely open their mouths to say "Good morning". They just say "it's on the machine" and send everyone away, tourists or French people alike.
Finally, in the area peripheral to the Gare, the rats that roam around, as if they were part of the Gare's adornments, are more than many and I'm not exaggerating, I managed to count 16 rodents roaming freely, 15 meters from the Gare, in a garden with a fence of 30 m².
It's bad, it's very bad. If you go to Paris and rely on public transport, prepare well beforehand, something I didn't do this time, as I didn't imagine it would be like this.

Signage!!!

This station is offering an increasing choice of eateries and shops, great! But as a train station, the signage should give priority to travel-related services (locker, atm, ticket office....), not to store. Finding your way around is never easy in a big station, so signage should be made clearer.
Also, a recurrent problem with French railway stations is the fact that dock numbers are only given 10mns before departure. As a result, a huge number of people gather below the signboard, obstructing the way for everybody else. Then, 200 travelers rush to the train at the same time, absurd!!

And I am French, so I can imagine how confusing it must be for foreign travelers!

When will the thinking heads of the SNCF, if there are any, think of not announcing the route of a commuter train while the users are getting off the train? There are systematically traffic jams on the platform.
1 or 2 minutes of delay would be judicious and intelligent. No desire to improve the management of passenger flows. This is clearly the least concern of the SNCF

Don't expect large rooms in Paris, they are usually very small, but staying in a strategic location is a great option. I chose the Mercuri Hotel because of its location. Small but cozy room and good breakfast.
