Neighborhood: Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendor. This neighborhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.

Located close to the beautiful place des Vosges, this garden is a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle.
Walk through the well kept small garden, chill, have a look at the buildings around and leave through the huge portal/porte cochère.
(Palais/Hôtel de Sully couldn't be visited inside, but garden is free to visit).

For me, the best part of this classical formal garden is the surprise element. It is unexpected when going through the Hotel de Sully's passageway after visiting the cobblestone-paved front courtyard or when entering via an opening by the Place des Vosges. The green grass and shrubs compliment the beautiful Sully mansion, which went up between 1625 and 1630 in neoclassical style. Benches invite visitors to stay and rest awhile.
The mansion got its name from the Sully family, who bought the property a few years after the building's construction and lived there for many generations. Today, it is the home of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, which is responsible for historic buildings and monuments under state care. A room off the start of the passageway between the two courtyards offers books and other articles for sale about Paris and France. Many are in English and I always stop to browse here.
I like to approach the mansion via Rue Saint-Antoine, where it is located at number 62, and exit into Place des Vosges with a picnic lunch in hand. I then stop at Carette, 25 Place des Vosges, to buy a macaron for dessert.

Having lived in Paris for a year, I love strolling into the courtyards of the Hotel de Sully. A Louis XIII style private mansion, it provides quite a respite from the heat. It is rather hidden away in the trendy Le Marais district. Here's a mini itinerary:
1) Go the the Bastille Metro station to look at the Collone de Juillet
2) Walk to the Boulangerie Saint-Antoine and grab their delicious baguettes that have a woody flavor for 95 Cents each (ca. 2015). This is a mere 100 meter or so away from the Collone de Juillet
3) Walk to the Hotel de Sully, stroll around the cool courtyard which is barely marred by tourists.
4) Right at the back of the Hotel de Sully, you can take the door to the Place des Vosges: the oldest planned square in Paris with a lovely park to enjoy your baguette.

Located within Hotel de sully, this is the perfect garden, to stop for a lunch break, with sandwiches (filled baguettes), we often end up here. it is surprisingly peaceful, with its tranquil setting, and being located in the centre of a tourists precinct, There is plenty of seating, to enjoy the gardens.

We always visit the wonderful bookstore in the Hotel, and afterward stroll though this very pretty garden. It is classic French design. And it leads to the wonderful Place des Vosges. Usually full of tourists.

After visiting Place des Vosges, we proceeded down a street with the garden of the Hotel de Sully in our sights. Upon arriving and exploring, (the beautiful formal gardens), funnily enough, we stepped through a door at the back of the garden and popped out into Place des Vosges once more - all a bit ‘through the looking glass’ really.

This garden space is located between the Hotel de Sully, a 16th century style mansion entered from the very busy Rue de Rivoli and the additionally relaxing Place des Vosges...there is space for relaxing on a busy day in this area of visually stunning attractions...

When you enter the courtyard garden across from the Church of St-Paul & St-Louis you think you will be entering this Marais mansion museum or archive. However when you go through the door to the far right, it takes you back to Place des Vosges. Basically it's an elaborate portal to back around the corner where you probably came from (Place des Vosges)

Beautiful garden behind the Hotel de Sully, and also behind the Place des Vosges. Lovely spot in the Marais. I love the bookstore in the Hotel, great source for books on Paris and France.

If you are going to the Place des Vosges, and you should, be sure to visit the garden at the l'Hotel de Sully. You will enjoy the architecture and find it is a great place to take photos. Look for the sculpture inn one corner. The opening nicely frames your portraits. You can enter the Place from the garden.
