Walking past the Buttes Chaumont, a family member mentioned the presence of a Russian Orthodox Church on the Rue Crimee. We knocked on the door of what we THOUGHT was the church and happened upon a group of priests eating dinner.
They graciously asked us in and one took us up to the actual sanctuary. We have Russian speakers in the family and were given a half hour lecture about the church (previously a Lutheran church) the icons, and a wonderful 16th century door.
A well hidden gem in the 19th arrondissement worth a look for anyone interested in Russian churches in the West.

Hidden in a narrow laneway down from Buttes Chaumont park is a little gem of a Russian Orthodox church. It is quite tricky to find but we asked directions from a very helpful lady in the patisserie on the main street. The church is nestled in a quiet tree filled corner in this very poor part of Paris. The outside is black and red painted carved wood, much like the architecture of a Norwegian stave church. Dramatic patterns and paintings adorn the walls of the steps and the arched doorway. The interior is breathtaking. Shimmering gold and silver icons glint from the walls. Ornate lamps hang from the ceiling. Painted saints watch silently. The attendant greeted us gruffly, probably surprised that tourists would make their way from the main sites, but he allowed us to wander freely and take photos. Unfortunately there was no information in English to give us some background to this amazing building, and our Russian is sadly non existent. Thankfully the language of stunning art and architecture is universal, as is a smile. It was certainly worth the afternoon hunt. A lovely way to end a morning in the nearby Butte Chaumont park.

we found this in a book called secret Paris. It is up a little pedestrianised slope pff a main road near houses with pretty gardens and is made of wood and carved like a Swiss chalet. Both outside and inside there are some lovely paintings direct onto the woos as well as other icons and artefacts. We were able to get into the upper room, well woprt the visit, but the main church is impressive, but was not open when we were there,

Situated in the centre of Paris, this cathedral looks like the house of Aladdin with impressive golden coloured towers. Not the kind of building you would expect to see in the middle of Paris, but still matches with the surrounding area.

We found this church on some travel advise page. When we went there we coulnd't find it at first.. The church is hidden behind some typical french houses form the 19th century. Behind them on a hill you will find different houses and this little chappel. It was closed to us but a friendly english scholar came to open and explain us everything about this churchs history. It used to be protestant but after the first WW it became orthodox.

Since the church has limited visiting hours we were only able to view the exterior. It is the church where Picasso married his wife Olga. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Louis Sullivan Russian Orthodox church in Chicago.
