Neighborhood: Place d'Italie / Quartier Asiatique
Far off the beaten path, this part of Paris is a forgotten gem worth exploring. Avenue d’Ivry houses Europe's largest Chinatown with great Asian supermarkets and shops, and a thrilling atmosphere around Chinese New Year. Place d’Italie impresses onlookers as soon as they set their eyes on it. Not far, around La Butte aux Cailles, the streets suddenly imitate provincial France and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported. The beauty of these streets lies in their surprises around every twist and turn.

Charming village neighborhood, now home of some interesting graffiti art. So you need to walk around to absorb it all, the cute houses and one can imagine how nice it is to live here, close to the center yet quiet and peaceful. And then there is the art on the walls around. And look for a cafe to sit awhile.

From Place d'Italie it is easy to reach a couple of narrow streets that have nothing to do with the buildings and traffic of Paris.
It feels like you're in another place walking among low houses and small gardens.
It's worth traveling here to spend a couple of hours off the beaten track in Paris.

There were a lot of sordid looking characters in and around this street. This avenue is poshness attempted butto no success.

This neighborhood is like a little village. Look for the little gardens and the street art. Rue de la Butte -aux - Cailles is the centre. Look around in the quiet streets around like rue Buot, rue Michal, rue Alphand, passage Boiton and the rue Daviel with small, cute houses.

Interesting, colorful, mainly village-like ambience. Plenty of restaurants, some new and very top class, some of old charm. Wall murals and graffity, old houses. A water fountain from a good local spring at Place Verlaine where local people come and fill their water containers. To one side the Place d'Italie: a large square with circulating traffic but also plenty of flowers and flowering trees in spring time. To the other side emerges colorful Chinatown. Definitely a place worth exploring, so different from the touristic Paris and so far away from the maddening crowds!

It's not in the center of Paris, and there are no great museums or monuments here, but Butte Aux Cailles is a lovely village in the city, a lovely residential area with some cool cafes and restaurants, easy to get to on the Metro. Take a stroll and look for the street art.

Off the beaten path, but not too much, as this area has been discovered. It's a great place to stroll and enjoy the village atmosphere and look at restaurant menus. Stop for a coffee. Really lovely area.

La Butte-Aux-Cailles is one of those areas generally ignored by tourists. The main reason is the fact that it is located in a district not renowned for its attractiveness.

However, you won't regret taking some time here. It is still a calm place, far from the hystery of well-known monuments.
You will appreciate the numerous pieces of Street Art, each of them being truly fascinating. From Spring, Nature takes over again : you can observe many plants and flowers decorating the streets, the houses, even modern buildings.

There are very cool spots where you can eat traditional French food, enjoy some tea or even start a memorable night !!

In general , you should pay a visit to the whole XIII Arrondissement if it's your 2nd or 3rd trip to Paris. From Place d'Italie to the Asian District, there is a lot of diversity which depicts quite well what Paris is for true Parisians.

Be careful : La Butte-Aux-Cailles is a sloping ground. A good pair of shoes will be appreciated :)

Our hotel was in neighbor, we arrived last on a Saturday night and had dinner. Then in Sunday morning to our surprise, there was a HUGE street market, filled with vegetables, seafood, fresh pasta, flowers, etc and directly behind the street market was a even bigger street flea market, amazing! Highly Recommend.
