My niece was not only going on her first trip to Paris this year, she was also going to celebrate her twentieth birthday in the city. What I wanted most for her was not just to see Paris, but to discover, embrace and feel it in her core. Well mission accomplished and I’m pretty sure what sealed the deal, was our night tour of Paris in a vintage 2CV with Cedric’s Paris.
I contacted Cedric prior to our arrival. Replies were not only prompt, they were engaging. I got the sense that Cedric and his team were fully committed to providing a tour catered to the interests of their clients. Originally I had wanted to book the “Secret Paris” tour. When I mentioned the tour day would be on my niece’s birthday, Cedric recommended the night tour as it was near Christmas and, as he said, Paris is magical at night, especially at this time of year. And right he was. He even reserved two dates for us in case it rained saying that if we went the day before my niece’s birthday, we could pull up to the Eiffel Tower at midnight when it sparkles to welcome that twentieth birthday.
Well tour day came and what had been a beautiful sunny day turned into a misty and sometimes very rainy night. Our tour guide, the knowledgeable, charming and engaging Christopher (Cedric’s brother) contacted me to check if we wanted to postpone our three hour tour to the next day. We decided to forge ahead despite the weather and are so glad we did. Sure, sometimes the views were obscured and the 2CV top was closed, but on a Sunday night, in the mist and rain, the beauty of Paris was enhanced and more importantly, it was ours.
Waiting outside our hotel, we finally saw her making her way down the street promptly at 21:00. It was CV2 Youna, in glorious, glistening and vintage appropriate summer grass green. I saw my niece give me the side eye, but a huge smile soon took over. Out popped guide Christopher who immediately informed us that we were in charge of this tour. Anywhere we wanted to go, anytime we wanted to stop, have a look or take a picture, he was at our disposable. He also came equipped with two very chic umbrellas. And in case there are concerns, the back seat of the CV2 is surprisingly roomy.
Aside from requesting a tour of the Sorbonne area, we left ourselves to Christoper’s expertise and are very happy we did. There was something about being at street level in the CV2 that made Paris ours. We squeezed through some of the narrowest streets of Paris on Île Saint-Louis and Île de la Cité where, no tour bus dares to drive Checked out the area behind Notre Dame had a look at where the clergy of The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris reside. With minimal traffic at Place de l’Opéra, we stopped to admire and photograph the Palais Garnier. As we made our way to Montmartre, Youna (with Christopher guiding) handled the steep terrain with ease, approaching Sacre Coeur from the back. Turning the corner, Place de Tetre, usually filled with tourists, was empty and we walked into Sacre Coeur with ease taking in its ambiance. And so it went throughout the night as we explored the City of Light until finally, close to midnight, we made our way to the “secret spot” near the Eiffel Tower. At the stroke of midnight it began to sparkle and we brought in my niece’s twentieth birthday. It was magic.
Christopher was a phenomenal guide. Warm and engaging, he was knowledgeable and full of information (both factual and anecdotal). His enthusiasm was contagious. He brought along his tablet to fill in any information gaps or add historical references. He entertained us with his witty repartie and gave us recommendations for sites, hidden squares, shops and restaurants. We followed up on many of them in our remaining days in Paris. I must also add, Christopher is an excellent photographer.
Don’t hesitate to book any tour with Cedric’s Paris. Even if the CV2 top is down, you will not only have fun, you will also be rewarded with a street level experience that goes beyond any guide book.
