I, too, read “The Only Street in Paris” and loved it. The funny part is we’d already booked our accommodations on the Rues des Martyrs when I encountered the book. Imagine my delight.
This street has everything you’d expect in Paris. Bakeries and ice cream places abound. Chocolatiers are plentiful. There are cheese shops and wine shops, a fish market and a butcher shop. There’s even several florists and a carousel.
Most of all, there are cafes and restaurants of every sort. If you include the side streets adjacent to it, there is a bewildering variety of cuisines including Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Lebanese, Greek, Japanese, French, and a few more I’m surely missing. What a culinary scene! The best part may be that some of them are priced reasonably.
We may not be happy with our airBnB (it’s kind of a dump) but the street and the neighborhood are fantastic.

This is the street that has it all, great cafe's and shops of every variety. It is has a terrific Parisien charm to it and so close to many places of interest. It leads up to the impressive Sacred Heart Cathedral, birthplace of the Jesuits. Everyone must visit La Rue des Martyrs. I'd live in the neighborhood if I could. Formidable!

Get off at metro stop Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. The Rue des Martyrs starts at the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Church and ends near the Place des Abbesses. The busy Boulevard de Rochechouart slices the street in two at the Pigalle Métro, and divides it between the 9th and the 18th Arrondissements. It is a great street to experience Paris, much like a small village full of excellent food and craft stores. Most are open Sundays, so that this area is a great alternative to the Marais, which is frequently over-crowded on Sundays. You won't be disappointed. This is one of the truly unique streets in Paris you will always remember. After you have brunch or lunch, you can walk up to the Montmartre, or back down to the Opera and Grand Magasins. Plan to spend a few hours, the surrounding streets and neighborhood are also very Paris in terms of Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings for photos.

We went to this street on Monday and 99% of the shops were closed! There are many unique shops, however, so we shall circle back again.

We have just returned from a 4-night stay in Paris, where we rented a lovely apartment on the Rue des Martyrs. I was dubious about staying in the 9th arrondissement and expected it to offer none of the hipster chic attractions of the Marais, where we had stayed previously. Boy, was I wrong! This is a wonderful, long street that stretches from Notre Dame de Lorette church at the bottom up the hill into bohemian Montmartre. I had the most wonderful omelette of my life at Bistrot Smiley, bought the most deliriously delicious small cakes and sweets at Sebastien Gaudard Patisserie and bagged some vintage mounted butterflies at bobo brocante L'Objet Qui Parle. There are bookshops, pharmacies, a fishmonger, a butchers shop that has been in the same family for a century, bars, charcuteries and an intriguing number of optometrists. You can see the white dome of Sacre Coeur Cathedral as you stroll up the street and hear shopkeepers gossiping in doorways. It's the perfect mix of trendy and resolutely local. I loved it.

Bountiful shops selling authentic French food products with great displays and an emphasis on freshness. Expensive, up scale quality - a must see for anyone who loves good food and appreciates the art of cooking.
Food store managers are friendly, passionate and allow tasters. Don't visit hungry...

I came here 30 years ago, liked it then, and still do today. Its evolved with time, but still seems to evoke a little of everyday Paris life. There are others like it of course, but if you're walking up to Montmarte or Sacre Coeur then this is a lovely place to stop a while. The Rue crosses Pigalle and takes you up the "Mont". Lovely Artisan Boulanger Patissier places where you just must try the cakes. Stop for a coffee, or lunch, soak up the sun and watch the people go past. Take the 67 bus.

I rented an apartment on Rue des Martyrs for a week and enjoyed all that its lovely shops have to offer, from delectable baked goods to cheese. It's a foodies' paradise, especially when it comes to sweets. But there are also bars, restaurants, cafes, boutiques, flower shops and the list goes on.
The street starts in the 9th Arrondissement by the Church of Notre-Dame de Lorette and wends its way uphill into the 18th Arrondissement. It reminds me of many shopping streets that I have been on throughout Paris, so I would not recommend coming here just to experience the street. But it would present a nice downhill stroll for those who have finished exploring Montmartre.
And it likely would be a fun detour for those who have read the recently published, "The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs." Written by journalist Elaine Sciolino, who lives nearby, the book gives information about many shops and residents and includes much history.

It's worth the walk up the hill. The bakery that was awarded the best croissant in Paris as well as the cheese shop was awarded the best butter in Paris are
half way up the steet before you reach Ave Trudaine. which brings me to one of my favorite Coffee shops called KB Cafe, on the corner of Ave Trudaine and rue des Marytrs, at this point
you have reached South Pigalle. Great Cafe wonderful food and service. You really get the Parisian neighborhood feeling. I recommend a stroll up and down the rue des Martyrs. As soon as I get to my Apartment my first stop is the rue des Martyrs to stock up. I am sure you will enjoy this area as much as I do.

Is walking this street something that would take a whole day, or just a few hours. It sounds exactly like we want to do.
We have only 2 1/2 days in Paris. Thanks!

The area from Notre Dame de Lorette to Pigalle is an interesting place to spend 2-3 hours, enroute perhaps to Montmartre. Take in some impressionist history, lunch or simply a coffee, before moving up to see the artist enclave of Montmartre (see my comments). Public bus, 67 or 76 should drop you near to Notre Dame de Lorette, or the metro stop is of the same name. Monet was Christened here, Caillobotte's funeral was here, Degas's parents were married here. Chopin met George Sand nearby. Monte was born in Rue Laffitte nearby, as was Degas. Walk up to Rue des Martyrs, look out for a very small green fronted Paris cafe Au p'tit creux du F.bg at No.66 - take a cafe for 20 minutes, or simple lunch. A walk up Rue des Martyrs is welcome - again lunch or coffee, or a french cake from the 2 or 3 artisan bakeries are mmmmmmmmm. Go an see Mr Aoyagi at the gallery Pere Tanguy in Rue Clauzel just off Rue des Martyrs - this is the original gallery where Monet and Vincent van Gogh displayed their works when "the establishment" wouldn't and where they were both inspired by Japanese prints. Gaugin was born round the corner, Degas had his last studio nearby, as did Toulouse-Lautrec - they take a bit to find though. Make sure you slow down and just watch people go by before going up to the chaos and false setting of Montmartre though.... take a look at my other posts. Enjoy!
