Top ways to experience Place Dauphine
The area
Neighborhood: Ile de la Cité / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

I Like to Admire the Harmony
I come here each time I am in Paris to sit on a bench in the center and admire the harmony of the urban design. On 2 sides of the triangle are lovely townhouses, most of a harmonious design. The third side was wiped out in 19th Century urban renewal, too bad. Still a lot of beauty is here and famous people have lived here. Simone Signoret?

    A public area
Place Dauphine is a public Square just off Pont Neuf. In fact this square is not square at all, but it is triangular in shape! Its name refers to the Dauphin of France and future Louis XIII, who was the young son of King Henry IV. Worth a stop if you are passing by this area.

    Lovely Old Square
Very harmonious architecture from the 17th and 18th Centuries surround this small square on the Ile de la Cite. It's a triangle and the lovely buildings are on 2 sides. The third was destroyed in urban renewal during the 19th Century and replace with court buildings. Sit on one of the benches in the square and drink in the atmosphere. Charming and tranquil.

An attractive public square (well a triangle actually) The Place Dauphine was laid out in 1607–10, when the Place Royale was still under construction. It is located near the western end of the Île de la Cité and was among the earliest city-planning projects of Henry IV. An attractive and relaxing spot in Paris.

Sit for a while in this square and drink in the atmosphere. The harmony is a bit disturbed as one side was torn down in urban renewal, but what remains is so lovely that movie stars have chosen to live here. It's in the middle of town, yet quiet and peaceful.

You must visit this idyllic spot. The Place Dauphine is one of the prettiest squares in Paris and lies at one end of the Ile de la Cite, in the 1st arrondissement. It is a quiet and peaceful spot, triangular in shape, surrounded by large red brick buildings, faded grey cobblestone walks and in the center is a park with trees and benches. On nice sunny days, you will find men playing petanque or just sitting there reading. Don't forget to look for Brasserie Dauphine and Tabac Henry IV.

I had heard about Place Dauphine for years, but never got around to visiting it. To say I was I disappointed would be putting it mildly. I expected much more, having seen Place Dauphine numerous times in movies and commercials, always luminous and full of interesting people...
Here's what I saw on a recent sunny May afternoon: cobblestones surrounding a dusty triangular center island, newly planted with small young trees, a few cafes along two sides, a few garbage containers - and absolutely no magic whatsoever.
It being lunchtime, the cafes were busy, but what I saw on the plates did not tempt me to linger.
Would I go out of my way to see Place Dauphine - no, especially given the hundreds of more interesting and attractive Places, Squares, Parcs, etc scattered throughout Paris. Leave Place Dauphine to Woody Allen - and your dreams...

At the west tip of the Ile de La Cite there are two handsome houses, warm brick with creamy stone dressing which mark the entrance to an unexpected triangular 'square' called the Place Dauphine. Built at the same time as the Place Vendome, this has been altered considerably since, but still keeps it's air of a being a part of old Paris which few visitors stumble upon, and the central areas with it's miniature bore chestnut tress has a beautiful period quality. When standing there, one feels protected from the bustle of nearby tourist attractions.

We discovered the Place Dauphine by accident It was an unexpected treasure.
It is the other end of the Isle de La Cite from Notre Dame and is like a little oasis of calm. You don't feel like you are in a big city here at all.

We had a jolly nice omelette and glass of wine and watched the world go by.

Then further on it was lovely to explore the flower market.

We just returned from 23 days in our beloved Paris. We have been going over there since 1994, at least 10 times. We rent an apartment in the very heart of Paris in Dauphine Place. We have been all over Europe, but Paris is a dream. You can stay there for 10 years and not see everything. The people are the nicest anywhere, they go out of their way to be kind and helpful. We are in our 70's and walk all over this wonderful city. Give it a try , you will never be the same. I can't wait to go back next year.

Sincerely, Marcia Emch

I cannot praise Place Dauphine enough. One of the best kept secrets of central Paris, this charming, character-filled square with it's wonderful restaurants and elegant buildings is one of the things that makes Paris an unforgettable trip for me every time. My mum and I have stayed in a small apartment above one of the restaurants two years in a row and have found both the location and the atmosphere of the square made it the best place so far we have stayed. Stroll through the place morning day or night and you will experience Parisian life at its best. Located near the busy Pont Neuf, you would never know you are metres away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The location is superb for a small stay although prices are high-we managed to nab a bargain and the apartment was amazing. Place Dauphine is a must for a lunch, stroll-through or night-time wander

This is a Paris insider's treasure--an all but hidden little "square" that gives a uniquely quiet respite from the teeming city. Even if you know where to find it, it is still difficult. And, it is not for the tourist who is ticking off monuments from his list. This is a tranquil little triangular area, just across from the center of Pont Neuf, and in the middle of the Ile de la Cite. It is sparingly filled with trees, benches, grass and a few choice cafes. Men play bocce ball on the grass, and mostly business-type Parisians eat somewhat pricey lunches and dinners in the cafes whose outside windows overlook the Seine and the Left Bank, while the inside overlooks the picturesque square. English is rarely if ever spoken, nor are the menus in English, so don't go looking for anything but a discreet Parisian retreat, and some of the best food around.

A nice little place to sit and rest for a while in the middle of sightseeing. Of course, it'll always be connected with commissaire Maigret for those who have read the books.
