I'm so glad I participated in the group activity and learned about the history and legacy of Black Parisians. Nawo's storytelling was captivating and I was very pleased with each stop along the tour. From learning about the goddess Ises, to the forming of the arrondissements, to the present-day sculptures dedicated to the Dumas' legacy. This was truly a highlight to my trip and I recommend it for every person interested in learning more about the history of Paris.

To be completely honest, Paris had never been on my list of places that I wanted to visit. I expected Paris to be unfriendly and unaccepting to people who looked like me. My perception completely changed after taking Ricki Stevenson’s Black Paris tour. I can say, with all honesty, that this was one of the most enjoyable and informative experiences that I have had during all of my world travels. The tour began at a sidewalk cafe near the Arc de Triomohe. My family and I walked in to a group of friendly Black faces. We were momentarily overwhelmed. We had conversations over breakfast that allowed us to begin the tour feeling like we had already made new friends. Miguel was our guide and his amiable personality was apparent immediately. He was knowledgeable, accommodating, and so personable. After a briefing on social norms (which was much needed) we were introduced to Ricki Stevenson herself and her beautiful daughter. Both were gracious and kind. We took the 2/3 day tour which allowed us to stop at several locations. Some locations we walked to, others we reached by bus or the Metro. Public transportation in Paris is efficient, clean, and felt very safe. Along the way, Miguel taught us in the most natural way you can imagine. As a teacher, I appreciated the way he gave us the information through story telling, instead of listing facts. He also carried photos to give visual representations as he explained. Our tour concluded at around 4:00 in the evening. However, the connections that we made did not end there. Three of our new friends actually joined us for dinner the following evening where we continued to enjoy being in good company. I would like to say that this tour is exactly what families like ours need when we travel to an unfamiliar place. Not only was it an opportunity to learn our history and how we contributed to this amazing city, it was also a place that facilitated connections and allowed us to see ourselves reflected in those around us.

This tour is a must for those visiting Paris! And I believe you should take the tour earlier on in your visit.

I have been on the tour twice and I have learned a lot on both tours.

The tour starts with meeting the guide and the tour group at a local cafe. While at the cafe, we received historic information, breakfast and Navigo cards to catch the public transit for the tour for the day.

After finishing at the cafe, we went out on our way! The guide took us around to very popular AND not so popular locations giving us lesser known facts about those locations.

The tour was very insightful and for my 2nd with my niece, she can’t stop talking about Josephine Baker!

One issue that occurred the 2nd time around which didn’t occur the 1st time was getting my confirmation details for where to meet for the tour. I ended up having to call the tour company the night before in which she sent me an entire packet of details immediately as well as explained how to get there from my hotel.

During my recent experience on this black Paris tour, I realized early in the tour that it was going to be a bad experience. The tour needs to be updated related to the materials used to demonstrate the history of black Paris and the accommodations used to navigate through the city of Paris. The tour guide had a problem with paying attention to her audience’s interest in her presentation. Four of us were so bored and disappointed that we left the tour very early. It is my opinion that this tour is not worth the $165 I paid.

This tour is very misleading. Why would I spend $125.00 to sit in a restaurant learning about African Americans on a flash cards and going to the park looking at more flash cards. This tour just let you go take a pic at the Arc with a group of black people thinking they are going on a real tour but it’s just to the park to end the tour with more flash card and off to the restaurant you go for a meal that you need to pay for.
Your tour is walking and seeing where African Americans may have eaten. I was very disappointed. But if you want to meet up for one day and take pictures with other African Americans this tour is for you. I’m surprise this tour is on trip advisor I guess people aren’t being truthful on this wasted tour.

Thanks

Our Tour was Amazing! My adult son, who blessed me with this trip, found this fantastic tour, and we fell in love with the entire team! Our Tour Guide, Nawo's impeccable knowledge of French history and culture is invaluable. Ricki Stevenson's personal experience of seeing Josephine Baker perform and her love for the city of Paris is captivating. We enjoyed learning about the Metro system as we could move around the city confidently. Ms. Stevenson welcomed us to join them a few days later for Carnival, a bonus if you travel during the first week of July! The tour of the hidden jewel, 'Little Africa', allowed us not only to see and purchase the beautiful work of rising designers, including a designer who designed for Beyonce but also to meet a few! If you like rare and unique art, clothing, jewelry, or delicious food, you don't want to miss this tour! It was indeed the highlight of our stay!

Ricky Stevenson and her daughter guided us through the city and history of Paris is a unique and intriguing way. There were so many interesting facts and stories that I began taking notes before we actually embarked on the tour. I learned many things that I did not know about Paris, but also about African American history, it's great personalities and the parallels between the two. In additional to the cultural and historical information, Ms. Stevenson and her daughter provided practical tips to make for a successful tourist experience. Their years of experience as residents of Paris shines through. R.S. is a passionate and engaging storyteller. There were a few hiccups, but most beyond their control (rain, bus strike, etc...) The day ended later than planned with a very authentic and tasty African culinary experience. I've enjoyed doing additional research after the tour and there are at least two books I plan to read based on her recommendations.
Be prepared for a lot of walking, data, information and food for thought! You might want to take along a poncho/umbrella and perhaps a snack. Taking the tour on the front end of your stay in Paris will help you to see the city through a different lens. Our eclectic group was an added bonus. My sister and I agree that it was a day well spent!

BPT Review

We went on a tour with Black Paris Tours for $150 USD per person. It was the most we had paid for a day tour in Paris. But our guide Nawo was so knowledgeable, interesting and warm, every penny was worth it. It’s been awhile since I was able to learn and retain so much information. She is very connected to the people around her and the city of Paris. It was lovely to spend the day with her. My sister and her fiancé will be in Paris in February and they too are planning on taking this tour with Nawo. It was a wonderful day we will always remember.

This was definitely a highlight of our tour. Nawo and Dedie hosted a fabulous experience! They taught us so much and really took good care of us on the tour. My husband and I learned so much about the history and contributions of Black people in this beautiful city. The level of extensive historical knowledge to share was amazing. I highly recommend staying for the full day experience with a delicious late lunch/early dinner in little Africa. Such an amazing experience!

My family and I were looking forward to our Paris trip scheduled April 2020. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 our trip was cancelled. I called Ricki Stevenson in MARCH (6 weeks before the trip) to let her know we would not be able to attend, in which she was fully aware and understanding as she herself was in Oakland, Ca and unable to return to Paris due to the travel ban. I informed her I would be requesting a refund because I was not sure when I would be able to reschedule the trip. In April I received an email from Ms. Stevenson asking how we would like to proceed either postpone or refund. Again I informed her in writing I would like to receive a refund. Since she has gone radio silence. I have called and left messages in addition to multiple emails. She still hasn’t responded. I have been extremely patient but at this point we are all dealing with the inconvenience of the pandemic. I have no other recourse but to warn people about this business and how they treat their customers in a time of need.
