They have tried their best to collect as much memorabilia as they can which relates to this property. It doesn't take too long. His personal possessions are there but I do not know if the furniture was actually his or not but it did look old enough. A plus is that the museum is free! It is free entry and has a nice collection relating to Hugo's life. It is set out over 2 floors and gives a nice insight to Hugo. Victor Hugo rented an apartment for a few years in the Hôtel de Rohan-Guémené, or Hôtel Arnauld, in Place de Vosges. Hugo's apartment is on the 2nd floor (European style - 3rd floor for Americans), and it consists of an few rooms The museum consists of an antechamber, a living room in Chinese style, a dining room in medieval style, a working room, and Victor Hugo's bedroom where he died in 1885. These rooms were not all originally here, they were collected from several houses where the writer lived.
All the rooms are very interesting, and they have several paintings, statues, and furniture worth seeing.
At the ground floor, there is a café and a small museum shop, offering museum guides as well as several works by Victor Hugo (in French only).

If you a VH fan then this is certainly a place you should visit. They have tried their best to collect as much memorabilia as they can which relates to this property. It doesn't take too long. There is a cafe attached to the property and you can relax in the central gardens afterwards.

Go to the Place des Vosges #6, go up the stairs, and you will have a wonderful
time seeing an apartment where Victor Hugo lived for quite a few years. His
personal possessions are there but I do not know if the furniture was actually
his or not but it did look old enough. A plus is that the museum is free! In addition
the Place des Vosges is worth a good look also.

Found this by chance as we visited Place des Vosges one morning. It is free entry and has a nice collection relating to Hugo's life. It is set out over 2 floors and gives a nice insight to Hugo. There are toilets on the top floor and a nice cafe in the courtyard.

How is this place free?!
And how are people giving this 1 star?
You are entering a building that Victor Hugo lived in. You are seeing furniture he used and owned - including the exact bed he died in, and artwork he painted as well as photographs and commissioned portraits.
There was a couple who walked past me at one point and one said 'ugh boring' and the partner replied 'tell me about it' as they left. I'm not sure what they expected? As a place marketed as a museum of a literary great's home it was exactly what you would expect - the rooms he lived in with his furniture and some info about his life?
Anyway. As someone who admires Hugo and adores his work, this place was incredible. I finished reading Les Mis just before coming to Paris so to be in the room where he began the piece is just overwhelming. To be where he once was is just... I can't describe what it meant to me and the fact I was able to do so for free was just so... the word humbling is coming to me but I don't know. I just felt so much respect for the fact little old me was being allowed to enter this place and I believe Hugo would love that people can see it for free.
I'm rambling now, and I do apologise. I just can't get over it and I am so so glad I went here since I never got the chance to visit the Pantheon.
If you love literature then this is a must see.

An interesting place to visit at Place des Vosges is Mansion de Victor Hugo in the corner of the square. This was Victor Hugo's apartment from 1832 to 1848. Today the property has been setup as a museum and interesting place to visit if you a fan of the French poet and novelist or have interest in viewing a typical residency at this fashionable location in the 19th century. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm (closed on Mondays).
Here you find seven rooms decorated with Hugo's furniture, artwork and other objects from his life which were originally from this residence as well as his property in Guernsey. The arrangement is such that you can learn about the life of Victor Hugo in a chronological manner.
Note: A visit to Mansion de Victor Hugo at Place des Vosges is free. However there is an audio guide service (€5) as well as temporary exhibitions held here which you can also pay to view. See the website to learn what exhibitions are being held at the time of your intended visit.

We went to Victor Hugo's house...but he wasn't home.
This place is a bit unusual. It is free, but you have to get a ticket. You also have to go through security and we had to check our umbrellas. You are not allowed to use your camera's flash, and there was a rather large gentleman there to remind you. I got the feeling that if I had accidentally fired my flash he might have tackled me and tossed me out.
The house was quite interesting and we were inspired to read more about Victor Hugo.

I have read in tripadvisor that some of the floors are free and this was indeed the case. If you are not interested to visit all the exhibitions, you can ask in the ticket office for a free ticket and visit, if I remember correctly, the 2nd and 3rd floor. You will find (almost unexpectedly for us) many interesting thematic rooms and an excellent view of Place des Vosges. We have stayed in the Museum for half an hour but if you want to visit all the floors you should spend around 2 hours.

An interesting visit if you are interested in Victor Hugo, less so perhaps if you are not. Several rooms of art, furniture and photos with a link to the writer, poet and political activist. There is also one floor that features a temporary exhibition- you might want to check out what it is before you pay to see it - its optional in the price. We bought the audio guide but you don't need to - there is plenty of written information. It took us about 45 mins to wander round. It's set in Place des Vosges which is a pretty square with trees and lawns, surrounded by lovely buildings and some shops and restaurants. A good place to eat after you visit the house.
