The Luxembourg gardens is where the prime tourist area ends in this part of Paris.
Going further south you enter the Montparnasse neighborhood which hasn't that much to offer to tourists. It's rather a residential - living and working area.
Main attractions here include an old and big cemetery and the Montparnasse tower observation deck on the top floor of the highest bldg in central Paris (see that review).

I live in Paris now
and here is the Best place for the nightview in Paris.

It's not free but it worth to visit.

I recommend to go here just before 30mins from the SunSet
and stay until after 30mins~1hour from the SunSet.

Check the weather forecast and go here on the best weather during you stay in Paris.

Montpatnasse is the best viewpoint in Paris. The EiffelTower is considered to be wonderful for the purpose though, what is the panorama of Paris without the Eiffel Tower? That's why Montparnasse is great! Not only do you get up almost without any queue but also you can enjoy the view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower !

While everyone is waiting in the long lines to go to the top.... sign up online/in advance, for a tour of the underbelly of the tower which includes a trip to one of the upper levels for a snack. A great price and there is no line to wait in!
A must see when in Paris!

My favorite place to stay every time I go to Paris is the Montparnasse district. It is always lively with many locals dining in cafes and walking on the streets. The area between the Vavin and Edgar-Quinet metro stations is especially good as are many good restaurants and shops. Several days per week near the Edgar-Quinet metro station, there is an open air market, and one of them includes art works by local artists.

360 degree views of Paris are wonderful and yes, you see the Eiffel Tower in all its glory, but at a cost of 14 Euros to go up to the observation deck - No. While the observation deck on the 59th floor, which is open to the weather, was not crowded, the queue into the building and to the lift to the 56th floor (after which you climb stairs to the deck) was long and poorly organised. The hold up? - slow lifts and please, on opening the lift on the 56th floor, don't immediately stop people for a so-called professional photographer to take souvenir photos against a phoney backdrop. Just consider that people are waiting downstairs!!!
Views from the Eiffel Tower are just as good (minus seeing the Tower of course because you're on it) and you'd rather say 'I was at the top of the Eiffel Tower than, I was at the top of the Montparnasse Tower.
The rating of Very Good is for the views, otherwise the rating would be Average.

We actually stayed in Montparnesse and we really enjoyed being in a part of the city that wasn't prone to tourist activity. It really felt like we were a apart of the city and we actually found some really great boulingeries in the area that sold some amazing pastries. If you're looking for a great neighborhood to walk around in and take in the Parisian lifestyle, take the M to Pernety!

We were lucky enough to get a tip off to visit the café on the 59 floor instead of paying to go to the top viewing area. There were no lines for the free elevator, a welcome at the café, and for a reasonable price we had an excellent morning tea while taking our time to view Paris and the Eiffel Tower in comfort. Is the view as good from the 59th floor café as it is from the 60th top floor - I don't know, but the tea/coffee & cake was a great side dish to the view of Paris.

Montparnasse is a mix of areas with great classic Parisian atmosphere and very modern and busy districts. I prefer the first ones, so Montparnasse is not my favourite. However one can find lots of things there: the famous Tour Montaprnasse with a fantastic observatory over Paris, second only to the Tour Eiffel; an old, longing cemetery worth a visit (famous people are buried there); bars and restaurants; nice old corners and modern buildings, including one of the largest railway station in Paris.

Since you are in Paris for the first time, you have to check every possible attraction to give your own opinion... We went at night so the view was sparkling... Paris at night is something !! But this is a place which I would not come back again...
