We randomly ended up walking past here whilst looking for the meto. It's a large flame which is the same on the statue of liberty. It has also become the unofficial memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales where she lost her life in the tunnels below.

At its core, the Flame of Liberty duplicates the flame on the Statue of Liberty. It was made to herald [no pun intended] the 100th anniversary of the International Herald Tribune in 1987, a gift of its readers to symbolize the French-American relationship. As fate would have it, it is also associated these days as the entry point of the tunnel in which Princess Diana died in 1997. I happened to walk by it en route to the Eiffel Tower.

This exact replica of New York City's Statue of Liberty flame was offered to the city of Paris in 1989 by the International New York Times (The New York Times Company) with international donor money. It was a thank you for the Statue of Liberty restoration work that was performed between 1984 and 1986. Métalliers Champenois and Gohard Studios provided the restoration services during that time.
The Liberty Flame is even more symbolic because of where it was purposely placed. It's at the intersection of l'Avenue de New-York and the Place de l'Alma, and continues to be a lasting symbol of the friendship between the US and France. I've only seen it from the river, and it was a nice enough view for me. Most people visit it because it has become an unofficial memorial to Princess Diana and is near the Pont de l'Alma. Everyone remembers that tragic day in the tunnel. The Liberty Flame is now more associated to Princess Diana, and rightfully so. It serves as an eternal flame to her kindness and compassion.

This is a replica of the flame atop the Statue of Liberty. It is also used as a makeshift shrine to Princess Diana. Makes for a good photo op for American kids.

The car crash that claimed the life of Princess Diana happened in the tunnel below the Liberty Flame. It has since become a memorial for her. There are love locks on the chains around the statue, pictures of her placed at the base, and graffiti notes to her written on the bridge next to it. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her death (where does the time go???).
It's a nice place to visit, you can see some great views of the Eiffel Tower.

If you are walking from this place 5 minutes to the port (Metro Alma Marceu - 9 or Metro Franklin Roosevelt - 9), I am highly recommending the cruise of "Bateaux-Mouches" .
You will take an amazing photos during the cruise and will see all the attractions and famous buildings from Sena. If you are coming during the winter or spring ( even early May ) - don't forget to take warm clothes and hats .

My friend and I are travelling from Avignon to London England next summer. Does anyone know if there is a train that goes direct or is it possible to book and do a transfer to a different train. It is too early for me to look up train schedules as yet but do need to book hotel stays now.
