If you are staying in the 6th (or even passing through), this boulangerie is worth the wait in line. Buy the loaf with currant, baguette and tarte au pomme. Take a deep breathe in with your eyes closed once you step inside. You'll swoon.

Twenty years ago I went to Paris with a guide book in hand called Turn Right At the Fountain. In this book I discovered Poilane. The description of the street and the wonder bakery has been imbedded in my mind forever. The little Poilane Rolls have been with me on train trips, cruise ships and on the airplane back to the States. Oh, to have one now! Vive Poilane. Helen Merken

The very first location of Poilâne, this historic shop opened in 1923 with traditional country breads, and those have been the signature ever since. As of 2012, Poilâne was producing about 3 percent of all the bread sold in Paris; the company's miche bread, a wheel of sourdough called pain de campagne, or country bread, is stocked in supermarkets, specialty stores, and restaurants. You'll find it in the shop, as well, along with beautiful croissants and a host of other breakfast pastries and specialty loaves. Punitions, Poilâne's signature shortbread cookies, are legendary.

Poilane is no more, it has become tasteless bread, hard and which does not keep well. I bought a poilane as a gift for my parents who no longer live in Paris, so I thought it would be a pleasure. They were very disappointed, the bread being like sour and hard. It's no longer the good bread they knew from before. I won't buy again. What a disappointment, especially when it is sold even by race!

Our hotel in Paris is a short walk to Poilane. Every day we first stop for coffee then head to Poilane for warm croissants and pain au chocolate. The croissants are like eating flaky butter. They are so delicious.
They are known for their rustic large loaves of bread. This time - since it was close to Thanksgiving - they had loaves of bread on which was superimposed a turkey sculpted from bread and the greeting "Happy Thanksgiving." The bread was a work of art. We always get lots of bags of their butter cookies - punitions - to bring home with us.

I'm besotted with their bread. I lived upstairs for two weeks and could not resist almost daily visits. Fortunately, I had to climb 36 steps to retrieve my goodies. Many restaurants in the 6th arrondissement highlight on their menus that they use Poilane bread, it's that delicious. They have a small cafe next to the Cherche Midi location that serves light meals.

Poilâne Bakery - arguably the best bakery in Paris for classic loaves bread (not baguette), croissants and apple tarts.
We are thankful to @annmahnet and Jeffrey Steingarten and their books for the discovery of this amazing place, located literally minutes away from our home - on historic Rue du Cherch-Midi in the 6th arr...
⠀
The story of Poilâne Bakery, opened in 1932 by Pierre Poilâne, can be easily turned into an interesting movie - so much has happened with three generation of Poilânes. Let's just say here that now you can buy their creations in three bakeries in Paris and have a wonderful breakfast or just light meal in the small restaurant next door from the bakery on Rue du Cheche-Midi. We hope to share the story about that place soon.
⠀
For now we can tell you that ”Le Pain au levain naturel” - simple wheat flour bread with just water and sea salt added is really really good, even when it is not super fresh. It is sold by slices and wrapped for each customer. You get more of that famous bread for the price of the baguette. We have also tried the apple tart - by far the best we tried in France - with super crunchy golden crust and apple melting in your mouth.
⠀
Buy two to save the hassle of instantly coming back. These guys are always very fresh and going really fast. Go there tomorrow morning!

Poilane bakery is about its legendary bread, and maybe the cookies you see in the window - and about nothing else. The refused to make baguettes until recently, but PR made more sense. Croissants, Danish and pasties are not their specialty. Many other bakeries do those items better. So visitors should keep in mind what Poilane is about.

We start every day (except Sunday when they are closed - darn it!!) with warm croissants and pain au chocolat. We eat them on the way back to our hotel and let all the buttery flakes fall on the streets of Paris. My favorite are the butter croissants. They are so flakey and crispy - and taste like real butter. There is nothing like them - especially when they are still warm from the oven.
We always buy their butter cookies called "punitions." They always have a basket of them on the counter and offer one to you when you purchase something. Take the sample and buy bags of them to take home. They are like potato chips - you cannot eat just one.
Of course, Poilane is known for their hearty, rustic bread. You can buy a whole loaf or any amount of a sliced loaf which they weigh and charge you accordingly. Their bread is delicious.
They have several locations in Paris, which have a staggered closing day of the week. They just opened their second location in London - lucky Londoners!!

Are fresh sourdough breads still available in the early afternoon?
Written September 10, 2018
Yes, all fresh bread is still there at the afternoon. The only things that are hard to buy in late afternoon are croissants and other sweet pastries.
