Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

18 years ago, I read in The Le Petit Fute guidebook that Bertillon is the best ice cream in Paris. I'm not sure that Berthillon is the best in Paris and even more so in the world (Italian Gelateria is incomparable). However, every time I visit Paris, I buy ice cream at Berthillon, either here on Saint-Louis or at their other cafe on the Rive Droite. The secret of Raymond Berthillon's brainchild, discovered back in 1954, is simple. No chemicals, dyes, sweeteners and other nasty things starting with the capital letter E. Fresh natural products are the basis of success of all masters of French cuisine from Paul Bocuse to Berthillon. The only negative is that Berthillon ice cream is more expensive than the average one in Paris. The reason for high prices and artificial restrictions on sales. Half of the 90 varieties are intentionally produced in small quantities. Berthillon has been and remains a family business for 70 years. You can taste it here and nowhere else. Such a life position.

Berthillon is not a hidden gem, discovering it is not something difficult - this place is probably included in every guidebook and is one of the most popular ice cream shops, but it is definitely worth the hype! Everything we tried was so creamy and rich in flavour. Pistaccio flavour was simply out of this world and the sorbets (my wife tried a scoop of mango and pear) were amazing. You will have to wait to order (we waited about 20 minutes), but you won't regret it. Even if the queue is very big, it is recommended to take away rather than seat, as there is a big difference in price.

My friends and I had a lovely time getting ice cream cones to go. I had a double scoop of tiramisu and café which was delicious along with some homemade whipped cream! The total was 5.60€ which was a little expensive but definitely worth the extra euros for the wonderful flavors. Service was quick and COVID regulations were followed by staff and customers. Would definitely recommend!

Wow! This is THE BEST gelato I have ever tasted. The flavors are excellent which makes it difficult to select what to have for your treat. I ordered the banana, chocolate and hazelnut and all were delicious. There is usually a long line but the gelato is worth the wait. As you walk to the location you will see signs at various restaurants that serve Berthillon but you need to go to the original location for the experience. My only complaint is I wish the servings were larger!

A sweet little ice cream parlor, with not only the most flavorful ice cream I've ever had, but the most unique and delicious flavor combinations that are simply creative genius. Using the freshest ingredients which are made daily in small batches, please fasten your seat belt, because the taste of their ice cream will simply send you straight up (to heaven). All the flavors are named. My first time at Berthillon I ordered the Agelaise -- the description intrigued me because it said "made of Armagnac and Prune." Would you believe it? Well, only at Berthillon will you get the original quality, and my, oh my, was it beyond happiness. I can't wait to return to Paris, and back to Berthillon.

They say you must try Berthillon ice cream when you're in Paris. And with some 70 flavors to choose from, it didn't help me to decide what I want to try either. Some of the flavors available were chocolate, coffee, marrons glacés, chestnuts, Agenaise, Armagnac, prunes, noisette, hazelnut, nougat au miel, honey & nougat, & many more than I can remember ... At €2.10 per scoop, deciding which flavor I really wanted was difficult to say the least. Or to consider paying €3.20/4.50 for 2/3 scoops which I can ill afford, but I did splurge on more than one flavor, considering my long trek to arrive at the destination . By the bridge over River Seine, I have finished my cone and pondered on my ice cream experience. Quite frankly, I couldn't tell a Berthillon from Baskin Robbins or Ben & Jerrys. While it's definitely more costly, as I went out of the way to travel and queued for an ice cone, I'm not sure if it's justifiable, but at least I now have a bragging right to say that I've tried the ice cream that many would travel from afar for. But I probably wouldn't do that again ....

I had fabulous memories of the "WORLD'S BEST ICE CREAM" I was very disappointed this time around. For 9.5 Euros I received 3 small and crusty boules (you know the edge of the container that sits in the freezer too long). I also asked for some water (the free kind) which never arrived. My friend had food and a Kir Royale, that were ok but VERY expensive.
I think this is one of the places that let their reputation go to their tetes.

Seriously, get the vanilla. Feel free to have two other flavors (because you really should be getting three scoops), but make one of them the vanilla so you can finally experience what real vanilla should taste like.

After a long day walking the streets of Paris, my wife and I decided we might stop into the Berthillon Tea Room to get a cup of their take on the hot chocolate. The time was 7:27 pm ... I know because as we walked up I was happy to read that they are open until 20:00 (been practicing my Euro time and knew we had until 8pm). As my wife walked in, we were met by a young girl cleaning up who initially curtly told my wife in French that they were closed and then in English barked again simply, "Closed!" and turned away. Now I know that when it gets close to closing time, it's sometimes normal to shut things down a little early. But a family was sitting down and hadn't even ordered yet. And if indeed they are going to stop accepting customers before their closing time, that's fine. But at least they should post that. Everywhere online, on their store door, and anywhere else I could find said 8pm. So we had to skip the ice cream.
Now before you read this and assume this is one of those "one star but I haven't even tried their product" reviews, know that the day before we stopped by and grabbed a couple of cones to go. The ice cream was good, but pricey. 2.50 euros gets you a scoop the size of a ping-pong ball. And to compare it to ice cream I've had before, well any place that uses quality ingredients in the States churns out a similar product. If you're in Los Angeles, I can name three places off-hand that do artisanal ice cream that would compare. But before passing a final judgement, I figured we'd try the tea room the next day.
So thank you young French janitor/waitress for providing us the first rude French person stereotype and finalizing our opinion of your establishment.

4 Euros will get you two "scoops", but they are not the scoops you are used to. Miniature, more or less 2cm in diameter scoops. The ice cream tastes good, but the sense of getting ripped off is not worth the hassle. Prefer the italian gelateria a few doors west, on the same street, for very good quality and decent value for money.
