The area
Neighborhood: Bastille / Oberkampf
Bastille and Oberkampf are lively parts of town made for entertainment. During the day rows of unassuming bars welcome customers for a bite or a drink, but it’s at night this area really comes to life. Students and young professionals fill the busy bars around Bastille and Oberkampf. At Place de la Bastille, crowds flock to the Opéra Bastille in the evening and groups wait for coveted tickets during the day. Towards Republique, skateboarders practice their tricks while others chill out at the square. If you’re looking for late-night revelry, this is your neighborhood.

This area is becoming more and more gentrified and thus more and more hip. Of course it used to be working class and full of workshops for woodworkers and furniture makers, artisans. Some are still here, but now it's a lot of cool bars and restaurants and BoBo apartments. Nice place for strolling.

This very long street takes you through the neighborhood where the craftspeople lived and worked. Wander on the alleys on either side to see their homes and workshops. One of the hot beds of social unrest through the centuries.
