Each time I come to Paris, I pay homage to the covered passages. Each one is different from very decorative and artistic to just plain. You can find unusual shops here and some nice informal dining options. These were the early 19th Century versions of shopping malls, got people off the dirty streets and into safely. They were very popular, but then went into decline with the rise of the grand department stores, and now they are being restored. Come see them all!

Don't visit them before 10h or 10:30 a.m. because you'll find almost all stores closed.
Visiting this covered passages is almost visiting Paris back in a day.
Each Passage has it's kind of stores, for example, there is a Passage that has more stores of stamps and collectibles, in other you'll find more stores of toys, other is more dedicated to printed art so you'll find serigraphs, posters and paintings. Since you're able to walk from one to another just by crossing one street (not all but some of them) I'd recommend you to just take a walk along them, it is very interesting.
Each one has it's own characteristics, don't miss the details. The floors with patterns, the ceilings in worked iron and glass as well as others details reveal the soul of this city that somehow is being lost in time.
In almost all of them there's restaurants and/or bistros where you can take a meal, some more modernised but others untouched.
It is also a good thing to do in a rainy day and free.

There are 3 cover passages “link” from one to another (cross the main road and you will connects to the next!) each offer slightly different offerings...
but there are some gems of interest shops to explore and also a stretch where small cafes are nestled in the small narrow passage.
Brightly lited and busy, it is an interesting experience away from shopping in mall, departmental stores, or giant boulevards or streets!

This is a fabulous hidden gem in Paris! We did this as part of a private tour in Paris with Localers. There used to be 200 passages in Paris a long time ago, now there are 20. After doing research on google, I chose the best 3 in my opinion and told our guide which ones wanted to visit. They were all within very easy walking distance to each other and not touristy (even on a Saturday). We are not shoppers - we simply wanted to see them. They do have eateries inside but my guide recommended eating away from the Passages for better quality. Just neat to see these hidden gems and the architecture around them is great!

These passages are a bit spread out and differ wildly in quality, so it's hard to just give one score. At their best, they are cozy recluses from the bustle of modern life, full of cute antique book stores and ateliers, at their worst, they are dirty, loud, crowded collections of bad restaurants.

There are many of these lovely old Passage and Galerie in Paris. I downloaded a walk that included about 13. We found some more and found that some were no longer accessible. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk collecting passage and the lovely shops and restaurants. We still have some more to add to our collection.
This is worth doing if you have explored many of the main tourist sites.

I have spend a lot of time touring the covered passages and studying them. They are scattered around the 2nd and 9th arrondisements and full of unique shopping and eating experiences. Some have exquisite architecture. They were a revolution in the early 19th Century when people could get out of the bad weather and away from the dirty and congested streets, stroll in cleanliness and peace. Now they are historic.

Every time I am in Paris, I spend a lot of time in the passages. There are quite a few of them, all on the Right Bank toward the center. Each is unique. Splendid architecture. Some cool stores. Interesting cafes. A tribute to a time gone by. The first shopping malls in the world.

The covered passages of Paris are a hidden treasure. They are filled with quaint stores and restaurants. I went in search of La Bonheur Des Dames embroidery and cross stitch shop. I found it and many more beautiful places. We had sweet treats at La Valentin and it was lovely. When in Paris, visit these special places. You won’t be disappointed.

3 of us enjoyed this tour with the very knowledgeable tour guide Corey! He knows and loves Paris so his additional information made this tour exceptional. Our Parisian friend joined us on this tour so we know the additional information was a plus.
