The Medieval Heart of Paris (History Walk)

The two islands sitting in the center of Paris are amongst the best preserved areas of the city and represent its historic heart.

Medieval palaces, Gothic cathedrals and of course Notre Dame, the city's oldest monument.

Walk with me through the historic heart of the city & discover vestiges of Paris from the Middle Ages, the hidden treasures of these two beautiful neighbourhoods.  A trained historian, I provide commentary & explanations that will provide the historic & architectural context of the buildings we will visit.  More than a stroll through Paris, this is a lesson in the history of the city's foundation !

Hemingway's Haunts in Paris

Hemingway spent his formative years in Paris. Surrounded by fellow authors such as James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound & F. Scott Fitzgerald, he transitioned from struggling journalist to seasoned novelist. These men & women were known as the "Lost Generation", many of whom had suffered through the horrors of WW1. They flocked to Paris not only for artistic inspiration but also to find themselves.
This tour will take you to the places that Hemingway frequented, where he lived, worked & partied. Along the way I share documented research on his life & exploits, archival photos of Hemingway in Paris, and excerpts of his work.
From his first trip to Europe as a volunteer Ambulance Driver in WW1, to his final journey embedded with the American troops liberating France in WW2, I will share Hemingway's experiences in Paris, his lives, his loves, his work. We will visit his favorite bars and perhaps share a drink - you can even type a note on the typewriter he left in the Ritz Hotel.

Ellen was excellent. Knows her stuff on history, architecture and culture. Tour focussed on the Marais after an overview about Hausman. She pointed out buildings and details one would miss or not appreciate. Just the tour that I needed.

Ellen was extremely knowledgeable and did a fantastic job of improvising when we ran in to some minor changes of plans. Definitely recommend for Hemingway fans or literary buffs

My wife and I had an excellent time touring around 2 neighborhoods with Ellen. She is accommodating and flexible to your interests which is quite different from the standard large group tours. This is more like a private customized guided walk instead of a tour guide speaking through a microphone to a large group. If you are a fan of history, food, architecture, etc. do not hesitate to contact her for her recommendation on a specific tour. Paris can be intimidating especially if you haven’t toured in Europe before. Having a private guide is really worth every penny.

America’s Founding Fathers in Paris is a definite “must do” on your next trip to Paris. Our tour guide, Ellen, was fantastic! Ellen is friendly, knowledgeable, and loves to share her love of American and French history. The information on the tour was presented in a way that was fun, easy to understand, and easy to remember. Ellen even tailored the tour’s content so that the pace was appropriate for me and my two children, ages 8 and 12. We learned so many interesting facts about the lives of four of America’s founding fathers who lived in France for short periods during America’s formative years. We also visited historic sites and learned about some of the shared history between America and France. I definitely plan to take other amazing tours with Ellen in the future.

Although I've been to Paris many times and even stayed in the Latin Quarter, I had not visited most of the places Ellen took us, nor did I know all of the history she related. She has an in-depth knowledge of the area. In addition to her expertise, Ellen was caring and made sure I was feeling up to the trek (I have some health issues). Of all the tours I've done in Paris, I would place this one at the top. We covered a great deal of ground both literally and figuratively. I highly recommend the experience. We began at Eglise St. Germain de Pres and explored up/down streets that I didn't even know existed. We stopped at the Roman bath ruins, and Ellen was equally as knowledgeable about the history there as everywhere else. As an undergraduate history major and grad school English/literature specialist, I was impressed by her knowledge and grasp of her subject matter. She has great breadth and depth.
